Ban Metformin

Someone posed a question on another thread regarding the use of Metformin. I wanted to take the opportunity to share my experiences.

My mother, brother and maternal aunt are all diabetics. My mom and brother both took Metformin for years to try and lower their glucose levels. Both are now in renal failure. Among other serious issues related to diabetes.

When I was diagnosed two years ago with "pre-diabetes" of course I panicked.

Right away the endocrinologist I saw gave me a prescription for Metformin (sometimes called Glucophage). I refused to take it.

The black box warning on the med insert should be enough to encourage ANYONE to stay clear of this drug.

It is liked to kidney disease, heart disease (in diabetics congestive heart failure), liver disease, stroke, blood disorders, intestinal disease (in diabetics gastroparesis), B and D vitamin deficiencies, anemia...just to name the most frequently diagnosed.

IF you insist on taking this medication, you MUST drink copious amounts of water and have your kidneys monitored MONTHLY. Do not let the doctor tell you that you aren't a candidate for it. They merely check your creatinine levels to watch for problems. This is not good enough. See a nephrologist regularly if you must go on Metformin.

I myself would NEVER take it.

You can get the same results that Metformin promises by simply altering your lifestyle. Eat right and exercise. Honestly.

" Remember ladies, there are two sides to every story. All I am encouraging you to do is to research and educate. Allow yourselves to be open enough to learn something new. Consider the possibility that what is common may not be the best choice. "

" Wow, this is all pretty fascinating to me. I'm new to health issues, and I've somehow won the lottery this year by getting diagnosed with Diabetes and Multiple Sclerosis within months of one another. I've never bothered reading about side effects and what not, but I'm getting the impression that with chronic illnesses, I need to pay attention to side effects of meds and read all the fine print, huh?

I'm not trying to sound snarky or display my ignorance.... but I'm just amazed at how much I have to learn about health and the role both medicine and exercise and diet play in it. I appreciate hearing from everybody. I'm learning a lot. Thank you all! "

" I am new to Diabetes2, was put on Metformin and did research it, and stopped taking it. I was also on a heart med that was as dangerous, and stopped that too. I figure that the gallbladder coming out will be the first step in the right direction and will exercise and do everything I can to get and keep my blood sugar levels normal. I dont trust drs, I hate taking any medication, even the pain meds i am on scare the hell out of me. I want to be off of everything and go totally natural healing. I have been checking my sugar levels more, they are good, so is my blood pressure and heart rate, so I am pleased... that the food and water I am eating and drinking is helping to control things, I used to eat potatos when I didnt feel well, now I dont, and it is helping, everything is helping, thanks to DS and some very good friends here... it is smart to research things for yourself, it makes you feel better, more in power and control. I may go back on the meds if I need to, but for now things are good, and I am having a very bad gallbladder out in four hours, and that should help...I hope.

Hang tough all of you, say a prayer that we all get better!
Cynthia "

" Hi Paindora,
I wrote a while back that I had my gall bladder removed. I really hope you feel much better soon. My prayers are with you. I've found out that my digestive systtem is screwed up and that's why I went to the internet for help. I don't want anymore medicines to take. Doctors wanted me to be scoped and I refused. I've been stuck too much with Iv's The point I'm trying to make is that once my gall bladder was gone I didn't have enough enzymes to help with digestion and now I'm very acidic and I need to get alkaline water to drink to take away the acidity and then my digestion will work better with these special Super Shield probiotics. Just eating yogurt or popping store enzymes is not enough. The pills have 13 strains of bacillus protection and you can't get that in most probiotics. The web site is GreatTasteNoPain.org
I hope you check on this because following the program will be the best thing you can do for yourself. Hugs, Mary Anne "

" Paindora, I have had issues with my gallbladder in the past. But I chose not to have the surgery. I have small stones only so I wasn't in any danger. Anyways, I started taking Lecithin and Magnesium and Milk Thistle. So far, I haven't had any gallbladder attacks. It's been since last October. I was going to do a gallbladder/liver cleanse but haven't had the time. You kinda need a few days because it causes you to use the bathroom alot.

MaryAnne, I'm going to check that product out. Sounds like a good thing. People don't realize that we have bacteria in our guts. That when we take antibiotics it completely wipes out those colonies and causes all sorts of digestive and absorption problems. Thanks for the info. "

" I am a nurse and a diabetic. Whether the medication does it or the fact that diabetes will do the same thing with or without medications. It really comes down to how much do you want to participate in life and slow down the progression of this disease. Some times it is a trade off but not always a great choice. "
