I am really mad at the food corporations for filling in food with cheap high fructose corn syrup and other inexpensive sugars!!! I went to the store to get stuff to eat for the week and I thought that there would be something I could carry with me so I dont go over 4 hours without having something (tomatos dont work well in the heat, lol) I really could not find anything, so, I am stuck eating rabbit food and lean protien, blah, I never eat fast food, nor junk food so I thought the so called healthy food I was eating would still be fine, wrong... I think the anger is motivating me to exercise more than I was, so that I will get back down to my normal weight (before the wreck, steriods, pain meds and inactivety in the halo) then I will be able to get rid of the lable of diabetic, I hope, I am feeling stronger, and so much better...

I agree with you. It's not fair that the "food corporations" can get away with hiding sugar in "so-called' healthy food!!!! It's getting to where I'm not sure what's good to eat and what isn't good to eat!!!!

These days you can spend hours in the grocery store reading all the fine print. And, I despise high fructose corn syrup with a passion. I don't care what their silly little ads say. I know there is a sensitivity to it in my own family. My mother and I both get bladder problems from it. She's even more sensitive than I am on that count. And, I guess it's maybe one of the few positives to being a diabetic that I'll ever find, but now that I have to watch what I eat so closely, I'm not getting the exposure to the stuff that I once did. So, that's a good thing.
I try to surf the "natural" section in our regular grocery store for a lot of stuff, shop at Whole Foods for a majority of stuff including prepared foods since they don't use chemical additives in their prepared stuff and spend a fortune at our local farmer's market store. Plus, I try to eat the fruit from our own fruit trees on a careful basis (watching the carb counts each day) because we don't use any kind of sprays or chemicals on our trees. We just have a few trees of different kinds, so it's not a huge amount we pick each season. And, when I can get it (and afford it), I prefer the grass fed beef to regular beef. It tastes so much better and it's apparently a lot safer and has less chance of e-coli transmission. I've looked at so many frozen dinner labels lately that I've probably got frostbite on my face and I won't touch any of them - the carb counts are way too high to suit me since most of them use a ton of pasta or rice in them, plus they're usually not all that good to begin with. I like my food to have this strange little thing called flavor. I've just about reached the point that if it's come from a big corporation, I won't eat it because it's probably got something in it that I shouldn't eat. I even got caught up in the Nestle recall. I'd bought some of the cookie dough to make cookies for my non-diabetic husband because the stuff doesn't have the HFCS in it. Well, it didn't have the HFCS in it, but apparently it had e-coli in it. Gee, what a lovely surprise. It seems like you can't trust anybody these days. Finding food can be a real exercise in frustration. I share the sentiments.

Frozen dinner CAN be found without pasta and rice but frozen meals in general have more additives than anything else. I have never eaten them basically because they're expensive and taste artificial. You will learn to cook your own meals and freeze in portions.

I am staging a revolution against anything that "man" made, no more. I am taking the whole foods seriously, too bad I moved from Dallas, they are everywhere, none here in Shrevport, yet. I agree, those frozen dinners suck, no flavor, just yuk, greed has infiltrated everypart of life, all I can do is not be greedy to set an example, and pray the thieves and scammers get caught. I was reading the so called healthy food, I counted four or five different types of sugar, it is in everything because it is cheap. It makes things so over sweet it just about makes you sick, I dont ever drink sodas but see young people coming out of the stores with barrels of soda, no wonder the USA is getting fat, I wouldnt be surprised if the drs owned the fast food companies...lol thanks for your comments, you all are awesome, I felt pretty scared finding out I had diabetes two weeks ago, but now feel I can handle it, I will just eat Kale and cawliflower.

I don't know how many people like to cook but I just checked out the recipes at dLife (diabetic Life) and there are a ton of them and you can look them up all different ways:

You have to watch the 'natural' labels. Most, not all, are not - labels are not regulated. You will find that after you read all the nutrition labels you will eventually be buying the same things and you wont have to read anymore unless its a new product you purchase. The food companies are NOT hiding the fact that they use HFCS. Its in practically everything. What surprised me was cool whip. The sugar version has 1g of sugar per serving. The sugar-free has none. I thought that was a little ridiculous because 1g is very small. Then I looked at the ingredients. The regular has HFCS.

HFCS is one of the absolute WORST things anyone can put into their bodies. The genetically altered chemical composition of it is a toxic poison to our health.
The second substance is artificial sweeteners. Doctors and nutritionists will tell you that they are necessary in the diabetic diet. WRONG! They add to the problem because they confuse your body. This in turn makes your insulin dependence greater. You are better off eating the natural sugars, but just limit them. Balance is necessary for healthy living.

What is HFCS? I have never heard of it before.
I use Splenda all the time. I bake with it, put it on cereal ( oatmeal) or whatever. I have never had a problem with it. Diabetics really respond poorly to pure sugar, so what do you do? I dont think I can ear sugar in moderation.... even a little bit and my bs goes way up. Does anyone else use splenda or am I the only one?

HFCS-High Fructose Corn Syrup
Goldi you have to do what is right for you. But artificial sweeteners contribute to the diabetes problem. You are better off with things like fruit juices, honey, molasses, stevia, etc. Even plain sugar. A big part of controlling your sugar intake is in cutting it out of your diet where it isn't necessary. It is a lifestyle change for sure, but like any "diet", it gets easier in time. For example, instead of putting 4 heaping spoons of sugar in your coffee, only put two. When you bake, try cutting the sugar content in half as well. Substitute with things like apple sauce or orange juice in recipes instead of milke or water. Then you can elminiate a lot of the sugar. As a diabetic it isn't realistic to NEVER eat sugar. It is however doable to limit your intake. Prepared foods are simply a no no for diabetics. Actually they are a no no for healthy people as well! Shop the outer aisles of the grocery store for the majority of your foodstuffs. Fresh is best. Only buy prepared or packaged foods when absolutely necessary. IE: Flour, Cereal, Noodles...etc. Healthy eating for diabetics is not hard. It is just a lifestyle change away from the fast food, prepared, quick eating habits of most Americans and Canadians. Seeing a nutritionist is really helpful. Take a class on how to cook for diabetes. It will change your outlook.
