Had to axe my GP, (Long, sorry!)

Heya folks,

Long time listener, first time poster...LOL

I was diagnosed type 3 diabetic 3 months ago. Fatsing BS was 210 and I had a crapload of symptoms that were classic Hyperglycemic.
I.E. Tired all the time, retinal neurapathy, peripheral neurapathy, discloloration and hairloss of the shins, the whole nine yards.

I said to myself, "Son, it's time to take control, as diabetes will kill ya."
So, I read this board, got the AMAZING book, "The First Year: Type 2 Diabetes, An Essential Guide for the Newly Diagnosed" and changed my lifestyle, BIGTIME.

When my GP dignosed me, he handed me a pamphlet and said "Read This" and prescribed Metformin, 250 mg twice a day. That's it! No recommendations for diet change, nothing.

I read this board, read the book, read more, and stopped drinking sodas of any sort, switched to water and started a diet.

Damn if I didn't lose 11 pounds so far and when the GI effects aren't kicking my butt, feel INCREDIBLY better in 3 months.

Attitude was EVERYTHING. When I started the diet and regular walking as exercise, I thought to myself, do it right or don't do it at all. The more I worked at it, the better I felt and the lower my BS became.

I kept a log of my BS levels and when I was going back to see the doc brought them with me. He only asked what my BS high was the last week and the low. When I offered to show him my log, the reason I brought it with me in the first place, he said he didn't need to see it. What???

Then I told him my life was hell, as the Metforming made me have MASSIVE diarrhea at least 3 times a day. It was ruining my life. His reply was "Hmmm..." then he changed the subject!!

Then he said that my type 2 diabetes was caused by not enough insulin! I replied that, No, type 2 was caused by too much insulin, but it's not being utilized correctly by the liver. He then told me that it was a litlle of both, Not enough insulin and too much insulin. What the heck is that nonsense?

Then he prescribed Glypizide and Lisinipril. Read about the side effects of Lisinipril and said no way in hell am I taking THAT. Filled the Glypizide scrip and is working great.

I was supposed to see him the 8th of January, but called him and cancelled the appointment and asked to be taken off the patient list. Talked to his receptionist and left that quack in the dust.

I wanna get a diabetes specialist, someone who listens and will read my log and appreciate the diet I put myself on. Someone who actually KNOWS what type 2 diabetes IS. Do they exist? I have no idea. And cosidering I have no insurance, will they give me a discount?

The doc I dropped gave me a discount, but I learned, Ya get what ya pay for...: (

Stay tuned to this broadcast, and we shall see...

" What a story... there are some crazy Dr.'s in this world... I have had a time also.. not so much diabetes as migraines.. but the last Dr. I was seeing.. was very worried about how high my sugar levels got when I was having a severe migraine.. then the next time I got a migraine , I called her and was having high readings over 300 and she told me to go to bed. WHAT?
I just found a wonderful Dr. she is great.. there are good ones out there, sometimes it takes alot of hard work to find them,,, I don't see a specialist with my diabetes.. just my reg. Dr.
I hope you can find the right one.. Take care.. God Bless You! Lori "

" Thanks, Lori! This board is a Godsend. It is really important for us all to realize we are NOT alone with this disease.

My wife is the reason I haven;t splattered my monitor with brain tissue yet, We've been together 29 years now. She has joined me in my diet and has lost 15 pounds herself. She has altered our diet and it is benefiting all of us.

My daughter balked at changing her diet, but my wife is an awesome chef and has come up with incredible recipes that are tasty AND healthy.

Once I lose enough weight (at least 20 more pounds) I will stop smoking and the circle shall be complete. Smoking is REALLY bad for diabetics and i want to quit for good. Every time I quit, I gain 15 to 20 pounds, so that"s why i wanna quit after another 20 pounds. I'll get there soon...

Dickie

I actually enjoy the challenge of diet and exercise, which blows my mind...LOL "

" Dikiep,
When I was firt diagnosed, the Dr I had acted the same way. I lost 55 lbs as I was determined. When I went back to see him, he
said you know longer have diabetes. I knew that was wrong. Then he siad he rather deliver babies. So I said good bye. I called nurse direct to recommmend another doctor. I made an appointment with him and
told him I wanted to interview him. I ask him if he was willing to help me with my
diabetes. I also told him that I was very motivated. I have been with him for 10 years. What most Drs know about diabetes is
how high is your blood sugar and what drugs will bring it down. They refer you to dietitions who only follow the American Diabetes Association. The ADA only knows
how high is your blood sugar and what drugs will bring it down. You will get more from
this group than you will from any one else.

" Man, there is nothing dumber than a dumb doctor. What you need to look for, my friend, is an endocrinologist in your area. A good one! I have had one excellent, one OK but irritating, and one lousy one so far. I am testing out a new one now and it's rough.

It sounds like you are making excellent progress already. If I were you I would ask your local diabetes education provider (call around to the hospitals to find one) to ask for a recommendation, and list what you want, for instance, "I'm looking for an endocrinologist who answers all my questions," or "I want one who's as aggressive as I am in treating my condition."

More power to you! "

" Thanks for the support!! I love this board as I know I always have a place to share and to learn from.

I will continue my quest for a good doctor and will post the results as they come along...

" It amazes me how ignorant some doctors are.
So many these days are little more than pill-pushers. "

" you can get a test that shows how much insulin you are actually making, its called C peptides or total insulin in australia
its not unusual to need to fire several docs when they dont know or dont care what they are doing about diabetes, many dont bother to stay up to date "

" It actually is possible to have part Type 1 (low insulin) and part Type 2 (insulin resistance).

But it sounds more as if you got one of those doctors who were at the bottom of their medical-school class. "

" Cliffstein,
You are right that you can have part type one and type two diabetes at the same time. Few
people know that. Few Dr. know that. I supect
it is more common in older folks like myself.
The diet is the same, but the treatment,I feel is different. if you are watching your diet and taking drugs that don't seem to work for you, it might be that your pancreas cannot
make enough insulin. Some drugs encourage you pancreas to put out more insulin, if you are making all you can, those drugs are usless.
After I lost the weight, I still couldn't get my BS under control. I ask for insulin, which
did wonders for me. Even though the dose is
quite small.
