Does anyone have any ideas on how to get my blood sugar numbers down after dinner! No matter what I eat, my numbers are over the 150 number my Diabetic Clinician wants them to be!
I am not eating food that I shouldn't, and yet the number remain! Last testing it was 175! My doctor says I only need to test twice a week, now, as my am numbers are so good! I take 10 units of Lantus at night, and it seems to be working well! Any suggestions??? Thank You! Posted on 01/01/09, 06:01 pm |

Now I might be wrong, but as diabetics, our blood sugars are going to raise to 150 or higher after a meal. It's why we're diabetics?! What does the dietician expect? I was told 180 after a meal. Does your blood sugar fall back within normal levels a couple of hours or so after you eat?

But to be in really good control you can't let your BS rise above 140 after a meal. I suggest you read "Dr. Neal Barnard's Program For Reversing Diabetes" -- it's helped me a lot with my readings. Yesterday and the day before I was 100% Barnard-compliant and every reading was in the high 70s to upper 80s -- then I ate some meat and woke up with my BS 26 points too high.

I suggest talking with your doctor and diadetic educator and see what they suggest. Everyone is different in how they metabolize the carbs and your needs will be different than the rest of us. You may require a change in meds. Also, your diabetic educator can also give you hints as to how to keep the post meal sugar down. I found out from my doctor that making sure you have a protein with my meal helps to keep the post meal sugar down. I was having problems with my post breakfast sugars. I now know that it's necessary for me to have a protein with my breakfast, which I wasn't doing.

when I was testing three times a day?, in the afternoon, after lunch, the numbers were good and bad I wish it was 180 after a meal, then I would be okay! Monday when I test Post, it was 175!! thanks for the support!!

Goldenoldie, I hate to sound like a broken record but when I really stick to the Barnard plan my readings are fantastic. Example: Today after a light lunch I ate a whole one of those big-butt Hershey bars (the 4.25 oz ones that are big enough to wrap as Christmas presents) and my post-meal reading was 98!!! When not on the Barnard plan, I can eat like a sparrow and still have readings that are too high. The lunch I ate today, minus the Hershey bar, might have given me a post-meal reading of, say, 198. Of course at the moment you eat a Hershey bar you are no longer on the Barnard plan -- but having that much wiggle room to cheat makes me feel almost like a normal person again.

I completely agree with Elton - what good is life if you have to follow the Neal Bernard book. I've seen and it is completely too restrictive for me - what fun would life be without this and that. We're restricted enough without adhering to his diet.
My dr. said my BS should not be over 140 2 hours after a meal. I know if I can cheat depending on what my BS is before dinner. If its 80 I'm good to go - if its 100 I'm not.
