Cinnamon and Blood sugar control

Several studies have documented that cinnamon improves blood sugar control in diabetics. Ive seen some diabetes educators routinely recommend it.
Do you guys take cinnamon tablets? if so what type and dose?

Here is a quick summary of the May 2006 article:
Effects of a cinnamon extract on plasma glucose, HbA, and serum lipids in diabetes mellitus type Eur J Clin Invest - 01-MAY-2006;

1) Several previous studies have found cinnamon may have a positive effect on the glycemic control and the lipid profile in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2.
2) This study used an aqueous cinnamon purified extract to address that question.
3) A total of 79 patients with diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 2 not on insulin therapy but treated with oral antidiabetics or diet were randomly assigned to take either a cinnamon extract or a placebo capsule three times a day for 4 months in a double-blind study.
4) The amount of aqueous cinnamon extract corresponded to 3 g of cinnamon powder per day.
5) The results showed there was a significantly higher reduction in fasting plasma glucose level in the cinnamon group (10.3%) than in the placebo group (3.4%) and the reduction was greater for those with poor blood sugar contol.
6) Conclusion: The cinnamon extract seems to have a moderate effect in reducing fasting plasma glucose concentrations in diabetic patients with poor glycemic control.

" Howdy,

I know that I find myself attracted to cinnamon when my sugar has gone up for one reason or another. Of course they are talking about something like a quarter teaspoon of cinnamon or more for therapeutic effect. Sort of like the amount of ginger required to do much good for stomach problems. Not nearly enough in ginger ale.

Still I really don't know if it did any good, but it does have the ability to make food more palatable when you are reducing sweetness and fat content. For instance in oatmeal or sprinkled on a piece of whole wheat toast with just a little margarine. (Or on some apple slices or a smoothie made with apple and ice cubes.)
And there is a psychological effect that can help even when you know you are using it for a psychological effect.
Every little bit can help! "

" I started taking 2 500mg of Cinn-Max cinnamon capsules daily this Saturday. I also started taking 200mg of chromium picolonate. My sugars decreased immediately. I take 1000mg of metformin 2x a day, plus 15mg of actos once a day. My levels range from 106-168. Since this weekend, they've been from 106 to 125. Today just before lunch I had 93!!!! I've never been below 106. I was in the 300 range before any meds and slowly my levels have gone down. I absolutely attribute this latest with the supplements. I haven't talked to my doctor about it, but I see her on Tuesday next week. I did have an appointment with my nutritionist on Monday and I told her what I was taking. She said there should be no problem. She also told me that these supplements work for some people, but not everyone. My hope is to get off the actos. I also was having some depression and I feel very good now. I even cleaned out my closet this weekend! "

" Hey Gammie
looks like most recent articles have looked at 2-3 500 mg tablets of cinnamon a day (in many differnt forms) but the previous post mentions Cinn-Max which i have seen used. You do NOT need a prescription.
