The gastric by pass can be had in the UK for those who meet the criteria Diabetes in one factor but you also need to be overweight by some 30% and have tried to diet first.
A report last week said that the bypass could save more money than it cost in treating people for type 2 and also the adverse effects of overweight. I don;t think it is too difficult to get on the list over here if you are overweight and have an understanding doc I don;t know how much the operation would cost privately,The exact same operation but if you pay yourself you can jump the Que quite a lot of celebrates have had the operation and the difference is amazing to see. I have not heard of the explanation how this can halt diabetes when even a very strict diet doesn't really seem to work long term?

It does work long term unless eat larger portions and after 2 years your stomach stretches.

yes a g bypass can help reduce alot of health issues if you stick to the diet you are given. my wife had one a couple few yrs ago.
she had sleep apnea, it's gone. she had high blood pressure, it's gone, she was on metformin for diabetes, she does not have to take meds for it, just watch her diet. she was needing knee surgery, not anymore , she didn't have the surgery. she had an asthma inhaler, she hasn't needed it in a few yrs. the cheapest cost of the gastric bypass I've heard of here in the USA. was about $18,000, that does not include excess skin reduction if needed after you lose weight. (some insurances cover both if medicaly needed) yes it's an old post but gastric bypasses are still being done everyday & they can help ppl who are dedicated enough to stick with the diet. when my wife first had it done she was sick pretty bad from it . but she said she'd do it again if she had to. she lost 0ver 200 pounds & is about 100 % healthier now. the main way ppl lose weight is by cutting down on carbohydrates.

I have read of some one who was hypnotised into believing thay had Gastric bypass and lost weight
some kind of experiment but she also probably stuck to the recommended by pass diet. also all the procedure;s for the gastric band except the surgery were carried out. My question as a failed dieter is if I could keep to the same diet a bypass patient would eat Would I get all the benefits i/e no more diabetic meds??? and also how can you get all the nutrients the body needs from such a restricted diet what I seen ot the diet people have after these ops seems almost an anorexic One

it does depend on your metabolism if the diet would work without surgery. my wife wasn't able to lose without surgery.
But my cousin was able to lose weight without the surgery but she had it anyway. why she had the surgery no one knows. but yes you could be able to stop some meds with doctors care . you get nutrients from meat and other things too. my wife usualy eats the same things I do except bread & limits the amount of potatoes. if you look up 'low carb diets' you may be able to lose weight that way. also stop or drink very little carbonated drinks. they bloat the stomach. that's how my sis loses weight n my wife keeps it off. basicaly what the g bypass does is shrink your stomach n lessen the amount your stomach can hold.

To summarize here, losing weight is the RX for curing most ills. Whether it be by diet or GBS. The difference in GBS is that you get the dumping effect and a lot of nutrients are lost in these dumpings. Diet is certainly the preferred but if its impossible to lose on your own, GBS is a must because being obese is a killer.

the dumping syndrom is temporary & very rare after a few weeks.
I also reccommend trying the low carb diet first. the bypass is only for ppl who can't lose weight on their own because of bad metabolism. and it is only successful if you stick to the diet as well.

Here is an explanation below. the cure is actually prior to the weight loss most of the time. Link for entire article follows.
Because type 2 diabetes is a disease of the foregut--the first part of the stomach and digestive system--the operation has proven effective in directing food and sugars away from the insulin-sensitive part of the body's absorption system. "As a result," says Duncan, "the diabetes goes away." "We used to think that the diabetes resolved because the patient was losing weight. But what we have found out is that the diabetes would completely go away within a couple weeks after surgery, and that is usually before the patient has lost a significant amount of weight. This happened by the food stream avoiding the foregut, because that's where the receptors are that stimulate the problem that we have with diabetes." Duncan says that the results have been so positive that there is a push to make the bypass procedure, now only available to the obese, available to anyone with type 2 diabetes, whether obese or not. "We are trying to get that changed because we think that if we can cure type 2 diabetes, it should be offered to everyone," says Duncan, who says that he has "cured" more than 800 people with type 2 diabetes. "It's a no-brainer to me. Dying by losing your extremities, renal failure, kidney failure, going blind, a slow painful death is a terrible way to go, as far as I am concerned. Especially in the African-American community, which is hit so hard by diabetes." But health care experts like Dr. Duane T. Smoot, chairman of the Department of Medicine at Howard University Hospital, warns that much thought should be given before someone Who is obese, much less someone who is not, undergoes such a drastic surgical procedure. "It is an option ... but the problem is that there are just certain centers that do a good job, and other centers that don't ... So it's important to be picky," says Smoot, adding that Howard's hospital does not offer the gastric-bypass procedure. "This is something that was done many years ago and the outcomes were very poor ... There have been a lot of mistakes, and this has become one of the most frequent causes of lawsuits in the country." Smoot says that one problem with weight-loss surgery is that the procedure uses a mechanical solution for a physiological problem. "And many times you run into problems when you do that," he says. "When you're talking about weight and calories, it's going to be more the art of medicine than the science of medicine that will be most effective. It's better to try to get into a program where you lose weight naturally, using a team approach, to deal with the physical and mental aspects of weight." The American Diabetes Association has remained neutral on the benefits of gastric-bypass surgery in resolving diabetes. In a position statement, the association noted: "Bariatric surgery may be considered for some [morbidly obese] individuals with type 2 diabetes ... and can result in marked improvements in glycemia (blood sugar levels). The long-term benefits and risks of bariatric surgery in individuals with pre-diabetes or diabetes continue to be studied." In the United States, two out of every three adults--or 127 million people--are overweight, and almost half of them are obese. But more worrisome, 8 million Americans are morbidly obese, being 100 pounds or more over their ideal body weight or having a Body Mass Index (BMI) of 40 or more. http://findarticles.com/p/articles/...
