Good day everyone. I was diagnosed type 2 back in late May. I take 500mg. Metformin once a day, along with 20 mg. Zocor and 5mg Lisinopril, once a day. I do my best to take care of myself by eating healthy and exercising daily. I’m a little nervous, being my first time here, and I’m ready to learn how to maintain a healthy lifestyle and to learn more about eating healthier foods and exercising more. I’m a good listener and always am happy to help others out too. Thanks and have a great day.

Welcome faithanddreams! You came to a really good place! The people here are all really friendly and everyone here will pitch in and help you. You have taken a big step in recognizing that you need to change things to bring your diabetes under control.
Now Mzizgayle has a wonderful speech she does, and I decided to paraphrase it myself. Avoid sugars, white bread, potatoes, white rice and pastas with the exceptions of Dreamfields pasta. Go and take a look at yourself in the mirror and say, "I am going to do this, I CAN do this" Think of your reasons for wanting to get control over your diagbetes and when you feel low or feel frustrated, think about your reasons again and it does help! Ask questions because the more that you understand how diabetes affects you, the more control you can take. Be careful of the snake oil remedies! There are a lot of them out there that make promises to "cure" your diabetes in 30 days or something crazy like that. Sorry to burst the bubble but that is not going to happen! The two biggest things to help your diabetes are diet and exercise! I have to tell you as well, portion control is so important, if you like to snack, find some new snacks to help you, there are some wonderful websites like dlife.com that have some great recipes. I have a website that can help you with your logbooks and your monitoring. It is free for all diabetics and it allows you to monitor blood glucose, weight, a food log, an exercise log, a sleep log, blood pressure and lots of other things. You have to register but that is so we can keep your data protected! The site is http://pcmdr.ca and I am very proud of it. Like I said, it is FREE so, you may find it helpful and it won't cost you an arm and a leg to try it! BTW, I love the picture that you chose for your avatar, it is your kitten? HUGS, lary

No reason to be be nervous here, we don't bite and we keep Lary (Nosty) on a short leash ROFLMAO.
But it sounds like you are taking the right steps in the right direction, so ask all the questions you may have and if you are not sure, then just ask again, so join us often we like the newbies LOL and Lary did a good job telling you what I tell all the newbies, but he forgot to tell you yes you can eat fruits, do lots of veggies, learn to read food labels and of course watch your daily carb intake per meal. Most of us do fine with about 30-45 per meal. Snacks are usually about 15 carbs...and keep a food diary, even for a week each month (as I do) to make sure you are on track

Thanks for all the advice Mzizgayle and lary. I won't be afraid to ask questions. That's why I'm here, to learn more about how to deal with my health issues AND to ask questions. I just started last night my food diary and I have an appointment set up with my nutritionist and my doctor at the end of Aug. I sleep 9 hours every night, but I wonder if that's too much? I did check out lary's website and it's helpful and alot of information to me. I check on it frequently. As for the my avatar pic, my cat Lucia is black with yellowish-green eyes, but I thought the kitten looking upward was too cute to pass up. I walk 1 mile each day if the weather's good, light aerobics in the mornings, sometimes yoga in the evening to relax before bedtime. I noticed my meds; Metformin, Zocor, and Niacin makes me fall asleep within 10 - 15 minutes after taking them. I'm always tired between 8:30 and 9 pm, but I always get up at 5 am. Again, thanks for the info. and have a great day. Debbie

they say you should have at least 8 hr, but I don't think I have gotten that in years lol. It is good you are seeing a nutritionist. Take away from your appointment what you feel comfortable. In time you will learn to read your body, and know what will work for you, we are all different with this disease and many of us have discovered some doctors have completely different ideas about dealing with this disease. In time it will become second nature and you won't even think about it, you will just count carbs mentally, weigh food as part of prep of your meal, etc
