I have been on Metformin for about 3 months now, just wondering if a side affect would be joint and muscle aches. I am having pain in my shoulders and across my back between the blades. I am also having a pain right in the middle of my chest plate, feels like it the muscle or bone, not in the chest itself? Could this be some type of side effect from meds?

" Hi there, that's funny, you described the pain I woke up with this morning to a "t"! The pain across my back was so bad I couldn't even stand my husband's offer of a massage and my right arm hurt if I moved it even a millimeter. I was afraid my Lyme disease was back!

I took two actetominophen and now (an hour later) I feel better. Turns out it was from painting the kitchen for the last couple of days

So my question to you is "what have you been up to lately?" I remember you said you had lost a bunch of weight, so did you maybe hurt something while exercising?

As for the pain in the chest, the way you describe it, there's a name for something very similar and I've had it too. Sorry I can't remember the name... Anyway, it's painful but it goes away. Of course there are hundreds of reasons for chest pain. Anxiety is a big one. Acute chest pain should not be ignored, but if you have time to wonder about it I don't think it's that serious...

Have you tried taking some anti-inflammatories? A hot bath?

(Someone else will have to answer about the Metformin, I don't know about that.)

" The name you speak of FM is Costochondritis. Inflammation of the tissue between your ribs.

So yes it could be that. It is generally caused by excessive stress.

But the pain you describe can be numerous other things as well.

Joint and muscle aches....where are they? While Metformin can cause these types of symptoms, it could also be arthritis, lupus, MS or as simple as dehyrdration etc. Lots of things cause joint and muscle pain.

The pain in your shoulders and back could be gallbladder, reflux or IBS.

Call your doc. "

" Thanks for your response. Hmmmm, I guess it could be because I got a Wii gaming system and I have been playing alot of baseball on it and that makes me use alot of muscles in the upper body. I just didnt know if I should chill on the exercise to see if it eases or goto the doctor, guess I will try some pain meds and relaxing a bit for a couple days and then see if there is a difference.
