I was rushed to hospital last week,had a job to get my breath and found I had high levels of potassium in my blood thereby causing me to be confused and mild paralysis of my musles plus odema,which blew me up big time.
It turned out the metformin was slowly poisoning me,filling me full of acid so have been remove from it and now am back on the byetta pen. Has anyone else experience a bad time with metformin? Posted on 07/27/09, 06:07 pm |

Metformin damages kidneys. It sounds to me like you have some degree of renal failure. Have you had that checked yet? See a nephrologist.

thankfully my kidneys are fine...but i do think I was taking too many metformin 6x500gm daily and they were slow release...
But the one good thing to come out of all of this is I have now been put on the new byetta pen which is similar to insulin,it medical name is exentide. plus it will help me lose weight as I do not want to eat with it,plus my blood sugar is the lowest Ive ever acheived. metformin isn't for everyone,but I was told to pesevere and endure the pain I was in with it,which in my view was wrong information.

My Endo gave me the mex dose of Metformin which she said was 2000mg. I was sick as a dog.
FYI... Byetta is not similar to insulin it helps you break down carbs. I am glad that it is helping you with your weight loss. It helped me for 3 months then I stayed the same. This lady I know dropped 50 pounds she did not change anything in her diet or 30 walks everyday. I am glad that this is working for you. I hated Metformin

I agree the max dose i have found is 2000. My doc had me on all 2000 in evening but my new one put it 1000 Am and 1000 in the PM.
It has helped me and I have had no issues with it. As far as the whole damage kidneys thing as said in past ALL Medications carry side effects and warnings So please makes sure to read and research your meds yourself when you are put on something new. The sides though does not mean you should not take the meds It just means to look out for issues that may be known.

Metformin did not agree with me at all I kept diarrea colon spasms no problem with my kideys She changed it to Glipazide which has been greatDella

same thing here after 4 hospitalizations with 911 ambulance trips from passing out they finally listened to me and got me off the metformin hypovolemia and hyperkalemia everytime my husband takes it without problems i have never had any kidney failure from it i think i was just on 1000 BID but that was years ago now
