Hi everyone, I know I don't visit that often, but I have a question today. Does anyone ever go a long stretch of time without checking their sugars daily?
I was just diagnosed in '07 and have faithfully tested everyday. I have not been able to test my sugar on a daily basis like I usually do because I cannot afford the measley $15 co-pay to get my strips. Is that ok? Am I over reacting? Are there others who don't test all the time? I'm just nervous~ Thanks, Dawn Posted on 07/17/09, 11:07 am |

Testing regularly is SO important to your overall health. Otherwise you are injecting insulin "blind". It simply isn't safe. Arline I know you don't like me, but please let your doctor know this is what you are chosing to do. I really cannot see him agreeing with this form of diabetes management.

Each person is different. I test twice a week but I know what to eat to keep my sugar under control. For example The last time I tested was Sunday. Morning was 96 and after lunch 91
And of course I take my medication every day Metformin 500 mg morning and 500mg evening. I am also getting back into exercising in the pool or at a fitness center.

not testing may give you the false sense that you know what your sugar levels feel like i thought i did and it was running high without me knowing it- the lows are easier to know that you are low, both are dangerous and cause damage i recently had GBS and was told that i no longer had diabetes when i left the hospital and true enough my BS was 80 for a month and a half then when i stopped testing because i was told it was gone i gave away the meter, strips, and meds and went along for the past couple of months thinking it was gone and followed the advice of the surgeon well my PCP still ordered a diabetic panel and getting the result of HGA1C over 11 was a shocker and put me in despair to say the least! when i stop reeling from this i will write a calm letter to the surgeon not to give advice on diabetes and now i'm back on lantus- my cholesterol also went up so back on lipitor and of course the lisinopril was restarted needless to say the months of what i thought were bliss weren't and without testing you never know for sure you are only fooling yourself and you are the one with the damages i hate to say it but i had burnout when i was diagnosed and have had many times when i quit testing like that would make it go away over the past 10+ years i hope this time a support group will make a difference for me good luck and take care of yourself! my HMO can't charge for testing things i don't know if that is just CA but you may find a cheep insurance group that covers all the supplies or write to the companies of testing supplies sometimes they have free programs too
