I read somewhere (can't remember where) that cinnamon has some good effect for diabetics. Anyone have any information, or links that I can look into this more? After reading the report, I started putting a sprinkle in my coffee each cup, and have acquired a taste for it, now. Wonder if I am really doing any good, or just having a different tasting cup o' joe.

Hi Simon
There is a New Scientist article at http://www.newscientist.com/articl... which says there is some link. Apparently it does all sorts of good things. There were loads of other links too, just search for 'cinnamon and diabetes' on whatever search engine you use.

I heard that there is some chemical compund in cinammon that can supposedly lower blood sugar. I have read that this is a myth. . .but adding it to your coffee won't hurt you of course.

Its not just a myth that cinnamon does help lower sugars i been a diabetic since 1969 and i been using it in hot tea with a sprinkle of splenda with it, on cereals, or any foods that i can use it with. I use to have like 200 plus with sugars with my diabetis now i am in the range of 130's to 150's range all the time.
It took awhile to help but its working along with good excerise and i justhave an all around feeling good inside me now...The Prevention magazine has good articiles on this too...Evonne

Sdsimon: remember you can search previous discussions on the site as we have had several on cinnamon...its a great question.
Several studies (most however done with type IIs) have documented that cinnamon improves blood sugar control in diabetics. Here is a quick summary of the May 2006 article: Effects of a cinnamon extract on plasma glucose, HbA, and serum lipids in diabetes mellitus type Eur J Clin Invest - 01-MAY-2006; 1) Several previous studies have found cinnamon may have a positive effect on the glycemic control and the lipid profile in patients with diabetes mellitus type 2. 2) This study used an aqueous cinnamon purified extract to address that question. 3) A total of 79 patients with diagnosed diabetes mellitus type 2 not on insulin therapy but treated with oral antidiabetics or diet were randomly assigned to take either a cinnamon extract or a placebo capsule three times a day for 4 months in a double-blind study. 4) The amount of aqueous cinnamon extract corresponded to 3 g of cinnamon powder per day. 5) The results showed there was a significantly higher reduction in fasting plasma glucose level in the cinnamon group (10.3%) than in the placebo group (3.4%) and the reduction was greater for those with poor blood sugar contol. 6) Conclusion: The cinnamon extract seems to have a moderate effect in reducing fasting plasma glucose concentrations in diabetic patients with poor glycemic control. Using red wine vinegar and olive oil on salads works well with lowing blood sugars i been doing this for about four months and my bs has went down to 104-130's before meals...
I also continue to use the cinammon in or on anything it will taste good in... THe capsules i have not boughten however as i find right out of the bottle works good for me.
