I woke up really sick and my sugars have stayed pretty low. I'm not hungry and don't want to eat. What should I do to make sure I'm still getting nourishment?

I know what you mean, its difficult when you dont feel like eating.I usually hve some porridge, I love it when Im not feeling well, you could make it with milk and use some honey as well. Or have a milky drink with some honey, obviously make sure your sugar level is ok first. How about Yoghurt or milky puddings.
Hope you feel better soon.

Hi, sinnersaved. The "not-wanting-to-eat" seems not to be an option for us, Type1s. Sips of Coca-cola (the sugary one) is frequently my carb choice when sick. Most important: Measure your bg frequently, it tends to go up in sickness, even doubles/triples your insulinrequirement, so don't trust your low bg to be steady. Best wishes.

When I am not feeting well, I like a really nice cold smoothie. I put in a little fruit, some yogurt plain and lots of ice. Oh yes, a little splash of milk. I blend it all in a blender and with the ice it is nice and cold. If you need protein, you could add some protein powder. Enjoy!

Personally, I don't see any good reason to eat if you really don't feel like it. For me, I just keep a close eye on my BS levels. I take NPH in the morning and before bed and Humalog for meals or to get a high BS down. If I'm totally not hungry I just don't take the Humalog. As for nutrition, unless it's more than a day or two, I really doubt you need to worry about it. If you are determined that you MUST eat then just keep it simple and light. Listen to what your body is telling you. If it says that broth sounds doable then drink some broth. If it says tacos might be good then eat a taco.

Oh, but DO keep hydrated!!! Water, juice, 7-up, broth, whatever you think is best for you. Keeping hydrated is FAR more important than food. That goes double if you are vomiting or visiting the toilet a lot.

I have to agree with 1stmayflowers on this,i don't eat if I'm not hungry! Keep checking the BS,if mine starts to go up I'll use a correction dosage of my novorapid. Drink plenty of fluids. If I really need to eat i usually have eggs, especially if I've been sick as I don't need insulin to cover eggs until 3 or 4 hours after I eat them. Test plenty and rest plenty xxx

Keep drinking but BE VERY CAREFUL OF CARBS like soup or lucozade. Your blood sugar may be higher than usual and you may need a lot more insulin to bring it down and keep it down. You need to check your sugars every 1-2 hours if you feel really bad, obviously not if its just a sniffle. Even if you feel too ill to do this, ask someone to come over and help out and look after you. It is crucial you do this to avoid ketones. If you are at all worried or unsure call your diabetes nurse, she can help with your specific insulin needs.
