My boyfriend, who has type 1 diabetes, mentioned to me this morning that he often has tingling and numbness in his hands. I'm pretty sure that's a symptom... anyone know anything about this?

" i have that. its called nueropathy..its damage to the nerves in your hands..it can also happen in your feet and legs and be quite painful at times..the best way have found to relieve my symptoms are sometimes running my hands under warm water..most of the time tho it happens when my sugar levels are high and ive also found my hands to be temperature sensitive...try keeping his hands warm "

" Your bf should def mention this to his doctor. If caught early there are things which can be done to help with complications. How are his blood sugars? He should try as hard as he can to keep them in range. "

" this could be carpal tunnel,he can ask for a nerve conduction study to be done which would confirm it.It's due to nerve damage,I have it in both hands and have damage to the nerve in my right elbow. My blood sugars are well within normal range usually,HbA1c around 6 and still getting complications so I'd second what Lizzie said about keeping the sugars as good as possible x "

" Thanks for the replies. I'll make him talk to the doctor. His sugars are really good, his last a1c was around 6, but he also had this for a pretty long time undiagnosed, and by the time they found out he had to be hospitalized because he was in pretty rough shape... so i have to wonder if any damage was caused then. Thanks though! "
