Wow, Annie you can be proud of your hubby's 5.7. That's a rather good number!
It converts if my mind serves me right to an average of about 126mg/dl. Not bad at all especially if he is checking just two times a day. It's not uncommon to run high for several days after a surgery or when sick, but it usually comes back down. You mentioned you are worried that he isn't getting enough insulin. Remember though you can get too much insulin as well and go low. I find when ever I shoot for an a1c that is lower then six I run into quite a few low episodes which quite frankly are an immediate danger and do cause me to have quite the diabetic "hangover". It may be this is the right amount for him. Thanks for being a concerned significant other! It always gives me a "warm fuzzy" that someone cares so much for one us. ;-)

Hi, Annie259
As lots of people have said: there is no golden rule. Your husband's bloodsugar seems ok (possibly rather low). I wonder if you should relax, this is his diabetes. Pressure on blood-sugar measures can strain any relationship. You risk having him protest by never measuring. Two times a day seems to be what he feels he needs and his A1C value reflects a good status. Don't worry, be happy!

Annie, Im with you... my bf tests only twice a day IF EVEN, and it always worries me, even though his numbers are quite good as well (His last A1c was 6..)
But it always makes you think about what if, you know? that one time he doesnt check and just goes to bed, and he ends up having a super low and dies in his sleep or something... I know, that's a bit overdramatic. But it's hard not to worry!

Update. We went to the dr. the other day and I asked him how often Steve should test. (We were doing it 3 times a day when his sugar went up after his transplant) but for the last couple of months, it was usually 2times (sometimes once) Anyway, his A1C was 5.7 and his numbers were good so the dr. said test once a day, but alternate - one day before a meal, the next after eating We see the dr. again in 3 months.. So, Steve's happy...
Thanks for all the replies. Annie

2 or 3 times a day? i do 6 and i also have constant glucose monitoring. on my lowest days, i test 4 times. my A1c is 6.3, but i`d like to get it around 6. an A1c level around 7.5 can and often does lead to complications. if you are having financial issues, check with your local chapter of diabetes care. if you don`t know how to contact them, ask your doctor.

I test about 4 times a day. Sometimes more, rarely less.
I was reading a few posts and noticed several people mention that they are only allowed a certain number of test strips per day and can't always afford to buy more. I know just what you mean. I was a Navy brat at the time I was diagnosed and so got used to "free" meds and supplies. After leaving that coverage it was very hard to get used to paying for my own. I found that Wal-Mart carries a brand called Reli-On that costs much less. I use it now partly by choice. I have had no problems with inaccuracy and it's a small monitor that has a backlight and 7-, 14-, and 30-day averages. The test strips cost about $30 for 100.

Depending on how tight you keep your sugars you can test less and less the tighter it is. I check 5-7 time a day. When I wasn't in school I checked 3 times a day because my numbers where perfect and I ate the same thing everyday. I just had to check when I got up, before lunch and before bed. I had it down. Now my schedule has changed a bit and I don't know what or when I am going to eat. If you have an insulin pump it is all easier to manage. But if you are on injections, you need to test more (before and after eating and taking insulin) it is really important. Anymore questions please let me know.

My daughter is ten, diagnosed eighteen months ago, and she tests about 12-14 times a day. Sometimes more.
