My 4yr old was diagnosed with Diabetes 2 years ago and I am having a HARD time finding child care that is comfortable with taking care or his diabetes. I was just wondering if anyone knew where I could look or what to do? If you ever encountered this problem?

" I know what you are going through!

My 9 year old son was diagnosed with Type 1 Diabetes when he was just 1 1/2 years old.

I have been through the ordeal of trying to find child care. Now that he is in school, it is not so much an issue. The school has people in place to care for diabetic kids - thank goodness! There are still some activities/programs that he cannot participate in like after school programs and our local Boys and Girls Club. You would think these people who run these programs would get with the times and make the changes necessary to include those with special needs and medical conditions. It's ridiculous! It's like discrimination!

Also, I have a 17 year old daughter who watches him when needed. Otherwise he is with his dad or grandparents.

When he was still too young to start school I put a very detailed ad in the paper explaining that the care giver would need to have experience with diabetic children or be willing to be trained. Luckily, I had a lady reply who had a diabetic son who was now grown. So she had all the experience needed!

That would be my suggestion.

Maybe if you have a local diabetes support group, someone there may know of someone or maybe even someone who belongs to the support group may be a childcare provider or would be willing to help you.

Hang in there...I know how stressful it is!

Anytime you have a question or need to talk, feel free to message me! I can share my experience with you. I have been caring for my diabetic son for 8 years now!

Hugs!

" I was diagnosed when I was 5 years old. My mom said she found her care for me in two places.

One she worked at a hospital in records so she asked the nurses there if they would care for a type one. So perhaps there is a way you can post something at your local hospital or even nursing homes (which also have many certified nurses who are more likely to know and be able to handle a diabetic).

The other place was the junior college in town. She found out where the nursing lecture halls were and posted up sheets on the bulletin boards asking if any one was interested.

She said she had better luck getting calls from the college but also had lesser qualified people.

Still took a lot of educating them once they said they would and many didn't make the screening process.

Good luck!

P.S. And if your type one hasn't said it yet which I know will happen some day, thanks for being such a great mom! "
