Yeast Infections

Hi everyone. I have had diabetes for 16 years - I am now 22. My A1C levels are not great but in the low 7's, but in the last few months I've been suffering from embarrassing yeast infections.

I've heard all the natural remedies and have been to doctors who have put me on creams and diflucan. Acidophilus seems to be working better than the meds, but I am wondering how long it will take until I see a more permanent result? I just started taking 14 billion capsules of acidophilus daily for about 5 days. Within the first day of treatment, I was cured...but then a few days later (while still continuing treatment) it came back...ugh!!

This problem is very embarrassing and personal and I feel burdened with it - not to mention I worry about what it's doing to my immune system!

Any advice?? I would love to know how people specifically with type 1 deal with this problem. Thanks :)

" I suffer from oral thrush, dont know which is the worst! I have had numerous treatments and have been on the acidiphollus for a month now. Its improving but not better yet.
I cant really suggest anything else, some people say that using yoghurt in that area (messy) does help.
Good luck "

" Have you tried Bio-K? It's the acidophilus (sp?) In a little yogurt like bottle. It comes in flavors. Regardless it tastes terrible. But, my friend who is a holistic health counselor, had me use it and it works! I keep it in the fridge at all times. You drink one of those bad boys and then half of one each day after for several days. You can also apply, the non-flavored, down there. I would be surprised if you didn't feel better. Google them to see where you can buy it in your area. It really works. Do you have any food allergies, wheat perhaps? Not that we are supposed to be drinking, but I have found a correlation between yeast infections and beer. No more beer for me. "

" That was about the age I got married and oh mercy were we well at "it" a lot more and that helped to create quite a few yeast infections. At one point he even went in to be tested as we thought maybe we were reinfecting each other as he would often have jock itch as well which I guess is the guys version of a yeast infection?

At any rate he came back clean and this was the advice I was given - one to have sex on a full bladder and pee afterwards (I know sounds horrid but it does help to flush stuff out the right way and wasn't so bad after all :-D )and simply rinse the externals and do not douche.

Two (which applies to even not the sex related ones), to not use the same yeast infection medications in a row. Switch them up as they do become harder to cure when using the same ones.

Three, quite wearing compression shorts and spandex tummy slimmers and nylon underwear. Use cotton undies and let yourself breath down there and keep it dry.

Four (this is back to if your having sex) make certain to use a lubrication as if you are dry as it will more likely agitate you causing you to have another. I found even if I just used a personal lubricant even a half hour before with just one application helped reduce them and then I didn't have to do it right then while we were at it!

Five if you are a tub bather be certain the tub has been sanitized from anyone with athletes feet - again I guess it's a sibling of a yeast infection or helps spur them on. Hot tubs I was told the heat should kill the bacteria along with any of the chemicals used in them and pools should be tested for correct chemical composition so as to not cause issues as well.

I don't know if some of these are old wives tales but it's what I had to go on when I had issues with yeast infections. Hope one of these helps at least a little and there was some new information for you to go on! "

" I have had problems with yeast infections as well. Here's my story...
I went on birth control years ago and, after a while, I started developing what seemed like non-stop infections. I saw a new OB/GYN for my regular pap and mentioned pain and itching after intercourse on the intake form. This doctor told me she wasn't surprised because I had "a red bottom" and told me it was a yeast infection which was due to uncontrolled blood sugars. We had not discussed my blood sugars at all, nor did she review my chart much that I know of. She treated me like an incompetent and misbehaving child and sent me on my way with Diflucan.

The next year I was still having problems with infections. This time I saw a different person at a Planned Parenthood. I explained what had happened with the last doctor. The new one told that it could certainly be due to high blood sugar. ...OR to the fact that the type of BC pills I was on have a high dose of hormone--higher than she felt I needed. She changed my pills and I've been great since. One or two infections, but NOTHING like before!

Keep in mind that women get yeast infections due to the simple truth of being female. It can be caused by (for us) high blood sugar levels, passing it to a lover and back, cleanliness (too much or too little), even bubble baths! Some women are just prone to them.

I would try checking about any meds you are on, try to keep BS levels in check (to rule it out if nothing else), make sure any lovers are in good health, keep clean--but DON'T douche unless a doc says to, and please try not to be too embarrassed. All the itching and pain is enough to deal with without that too. Good luck hon! "

" Thanks everyone for the replies. I have finally found something that works for me! After months of suffering daily from infections, I started taking high doses of acidophilus and garlic supplements. This is to prevent yeast from growing and multiplying in my intestines. Garlic acts as an antifungal and acidophilus replaces the good bacteria in my system. I also hear fiber supplements help to starve the yeast, but because I'm at work and school most of my days, I worry about having "laxative side effects" when it's inconvenient haha.

In addition, I mix together some yogurt (with live active cultures), a few cloves of garlic and a tiny bit of apple cider vinegar in the cuisinart to make a paste which I insert vaginally for about a week. It has worked better than any OTC treatment I've tried in the past. For the first time in months I do not have the red burning sensation down there and things look and feel like normal :)

I've also made a conscious effort to remove breads, refined sugars and alcohol from my diet (at least while I'm actively trying to fight the infection). My blood sugars are very predictable and easy to keep within a range of 80-100! I think the garlic has been helping with carb metabolism.

Be careful with the vaginal treatment. It can burn healthy skin if you use too much vinegar or garlic. It takes some trial and error to figure out what dosage will work for you. Also the supplements I am taking took a few days to get used to. I had some digestive discomfort which gradually subsided.

I hope this information can help others! I finally feel like myself and am not embarrassed about this issue with my boyfriend anymore. The most important thing to remember is that there is nothing to be ashamed about. It happens to everyone and it CAN be treated! "

" I have only had one vaginal infection in my entire life (knock on wood ) BUT I have tons of bladder infections... so bad that I am on anti biotics all the time. It does keep it at bay, but I sure dont like that. The docs told me that in a woman, the sugars sit in the bladder area with diabetics and eventually grow into bladder infections..
TO DO... drink lots of water and cranberry juice
Keep it clean and wear breathable and comfortable cotton underwear.. It works@ "
