I have had a great experience with humalog. I actually like humalog better than novalog but I got switched to Novalog back in Oct of 04 cause the ins. co. that I had then would only cover Novalog so I got forced to switch and I haven't been able to convince my Dr's to switch me back to Humalog since my ins. changed in Jan 06. You do realize that you will always have to be on the Lantus with the Humalog? Please don't think I am a Dr. cause I am not. I am a insulin pump patient so I just know a lot about the different insulin's and how they work with being on the pump.
I am just curious are you just takeing the Humalog at certain times a day or are you takeing it each time you eat and figureing out how much you need to give your self? Also the only reason that I would think that your doc would have you on oral meds is if he believes that your pancreas is still producing some insulin. That is what the oral meds do they stimulate the pancrease to produce more insulin. If you would like to talk to me more I would be more than happy to talk to you. Best of luck to you with being able to get off some of your meds and I hope I was able to answer some of your questions. Kara

I take the Humalog 3 times a day ( when I eat ) I start with a base rate of 22 if I am above 200 on my sugar count. I up it by 2's every 50 points my sugar level goes up.
Ny other concern is that if the oral meds stimulate the pancreas, is that good for my damaged pancreas that was damaged with my 9 times having pancreatitus in 3 yrs. Should it be stimulated if it is damaged... Is that safe and good for it? Thanks , Mike

Mike I would think it would be fine to stimulate your damaged pacreas since the job of the pancreas is to produce insulin also if it was a problem your doc would not prescribe you oral meds.
Now me personally my pancrease is not producing insulin what so ever and the way I found this out is I am on medicare cause I am on disability and I had to have a blood test to prove I was an insulin dependant diabetic before medicare would pay for my insulin pump. If it is a real big concern about taking the oral meds then I would suggest discussing it with your doctor and finding out from him what he has to say. If you want to talk with me more you can feel free to message me. Good Luck to you Kara
