I've been diabetic for about 20yrs. My sugars are all over the place. My doctor wants me to go on the pump but I don't know much about them.I also don't know anyone on one.

The pump is awesome. Not currently using one, but always loved them. My first was the Autosyringe in 1984. It was very large. Today's pumps are tiny and very cool. I was in the DCCT from 84 to 93 and used many pumps. The technology of today's pumps is quite extraordinary. Multiple injections is better suited to my lifestyle, though. If your doctor is suggesting ti then by all means give it a try. You'll probably really like the added ease of control pumps offer.

I just switched to the pump and I love it. My sugars have been very unstable for the past few years so I hope that they will stabilize with the pump (too soon to tell right now). I love not having to do multiple shots a day. I definitely prefer the pump.

The question shots/pump is classic, so I'll write, even though the original letter is over a year old and CthyHa, I suppose, already on a pump. I got a pump ca 18 months ago, and love it. The main reason for loving it is that earlier my blood sugar was all over the place, but when I could measure my insulin in more fine-grained units (e.g. 0.2 units) I obtained more stability. For those of you who are very sensitive to insulin/use a small amount daily, I recommend a pump. One or two units (like most pens use as the smallest unit of measure) were too large for me to obtain stability. All type-ones: Wish you a stress-little summer.

The pump...it also reduces stress when you have a high sugar. Pushing a button vs a shot. Go for the pump..they will train you and I knwo Medtronic has round the clock help by phone.

Oh my gosh, honestly, best thing ever. When I was first diagnosed I was seriously giving myself 8+ shots a day. Now I only have to poke myself once every 3 days. You really don't have to do as much calculating either. You need to know what your blood sugar is and how many carbs you are eating and the little box does the rest. It tells you if you need more for the bs or if you have enough active insulin to cover the high. It calculates how much you will need for both your blood sugar and consumption. Also, if you eat dinner and give yourself insulin...then decide to have a SMALL dessert you just press a button as opposed to giving yet another shot! couldn't imagine life without it!
