Advice:
Question about Lithium

My psychiatrist has recently put me on Lithium to help with really bad mood swings. I'm not bi-polar, at least never diagnosed as bi-polar, but I was having horrible mood swings throughout the day. So I was prescribed Lithium, which has really helped with the mood swings, but it's making me extremely nausea at times, to the point where I'm not eating like I should. And yes I take it with food. Which for me cannot be afforded, I cannot afford to not eat and end up losing weight. So I was wondering if anyone else experienced this and if it went away after a while or if it's something I should talk to the doctor about taking me off of and prescribing something different. I mean I see the psychiatrist tomorrow and was going to talk to talk to him about it anyway. But basically just wanted to know if it was common.

" If they have not put the bi-polar tag on you yet, they will after taking this medication. Neither your doctor or the makers of ANY psyche medications have any idea what it will do to your brain. The bad news is that there IS NO magic pill - the good news is, you can quit being a medical guinea pig and work through it and survive. BTW the diagnosis of bi-polar pretty much describes everyone living today, including the psychiatrists who use it. This may sound like a crazy person just posting trash but I assure you the only one crazy are those believing that it is okay to use drugs on a brain for a bogus theory of chemical imbalance created and NEVER verified - in the 1950s "

" These days Lithium is used as an enhancer for antidepresants. I assume that you are taking another medication besides this particular one. My son went through a crazy roller coaster of meds. that made him incredibly sick and even more suicidal until the doctor started L. along with his antidepressant. This helped him a great deal, it took him back to his old self (no the happiest most adjusted kid but not a danger to himself). He complained about side effects but nausea is not one of them. Talk with your doctor and see if he/can come up with a plan and I don't think you should be afraid to be labeled bipolar, if you need the support of medication right now go for it. Best of luck to you. "

" Carmina thank you for your response. I did talk to the doctor and he changed the kind of lithium I am on and spread out the dosage, so I'm taking it twice a day instead of once. It has helped. As far as bipolar goes, if I'm bipolar, I'm bipolar, not really worried about being labeled as bipolar. I am on an antidepressant and an antianxiety medication. Can't say I'm back to what I used to be, can't remember what I was like before I was became depressed. The nausea has gone away since the doctor changed my meds. Again thank you for advice. It helped a lot. "

" I am so glad my comments where helpful to you. Doctors have a lot of ways to play with the doses and combinations to try to avoid side effects as much as possible. What matters is that you stick with the treatment when they find the right plan and specially with Lithium they need to monitor the blood level and kidney, liver function.
Again glad to help and send me a message anytime you want to talk. "
