My 11 year old son was just diagnosed with checmical depression...we do have a lot of it in our family. He was diagnosed just last year with ADHD .. inattentive only type. He was put on concerta 18 mg. and that has helped him a lot in school. As the effects began to waver, we tried him on a larger dose, but it was too much for him. He's a very laid back child. Could the concerta have created the depression? Or was he always depressed? I think the latter may be true. Now the counselor has suggested an anti depressant coupled with therapy. He has weekly appointments. He doesn't really have any abnormal pressures or stresses except he did express to his counselor that he fears losing a parent, and he is frustrated a lot in school. He's shy and quiet, but he is very intelligent and makes good grades. My question is: I hear so much bad things about giving anti-depressants to children, i truly fear doing it. However it is recommended and i do want to see him happy and enjoying life more than he does. Are there any positive stories about how anti-depressants has helped their children, of course, I would like to hear all stories. Thank you for taking the time!!

Have you tried any other ADDHD drugs? There are many others that may not have the same side effects. I don't know if concerta can cause depression. My daughter is on concerta 36 mg. It has helped her in school too. She is also depressed but she was diagnosed with depression before the concerta. I would talk to the pharmacist and check the side effects too. Good luck I hope it all works out for you :)

Thank you for your story. So your child is chemically depressed and also adhd? I am wandering if he was ever adhd at all, or if the depression caused his inattentiveness. Was your child laid back or on the hyperactivity side? How old is your child? 36 mg is a large dose, but I'm so happy you are having such great success with it!

My daughter is 16. I am not sure if she is ADD, she is not hyper. The doctor wanted to try concerta to see if it would help with school because she has so many intrusive thoughts at school she couldn't concentrate. She also has been on "Medidate" and "Vyvance" neither worked. She was on the lower dose of concerta but that didn't work either. At this time she is still depressed, have an appointment soon with the doctor to talk about that. It is a process. :)

My son has been given zoloft...the 25 mg., and we break it in half. At first he was on the 25, but it made him pretty tired and spacey. I gave it to him at night. Now we break it in half and give it to him in the morning. It seems to give him energy and a renewed sense of well being. He is improving so much every day!!

I am not a doctor, just sharing my personal experience as I have had depressions and anxiety for sometime. The best way to get over anxiety and depression is to take a break from your regular schedule, go out, and take good sleep. This helps in clearing the mind and try consulting a specialist who can suggest you as how you can get over your problem. There are various prescription drugs to get over anxiety and depression, but these should only be used in accordance with the instruction of a physician. There is a lot of fake selling of such medicines on internet, so before you can order it online just make sure it is a real pharmacy. I am having it from http://www.xanax-effects.com

The "inattentive only type" is ADD, not ADHD. They're not quite the same. I have ADHD, Depression, Asperger's Syndrome, and Anxiety issues. I take Concerta and Zoloft. They have horrid side effects, but that seemed to get worse when I started Zoloft. So Concerta alone didn't cause my depression, Concerta+Zoloft did. So, don't combine Zoloft and Concerta.
I hope that at least some of that made sense...I'm 12 btw, so I'm around his age.
