(I tried posting this once but it didn't post?? Trying again...)

My son told me last night that he was depressed. I have been depressed myself for a while (and I am seeking help) so I don't know if my own depression is 'rubbing off' on him.

He does suffer from PTSD (as do I) from his bio-dad. This last weekend he did witness a pretty bad argument between his step dad and I so I thought maybe that triggered some of his PTSD.

He was unable last night to tell us what he thought was making him sad, or what he thought would make him happy.

Are there any books out there to read about it? THey could be books for us to read as parents, for us to read with him or books for him to read on his own. Even a DVD out there that address depression might help.

He does see a counselor every month or so who helps him with his issues of PTSD. Of course if I don't see improvment soon I will take him to see his doc.

Any advice is welcome.

" try directing specific questions at him.

when i was little, i never explained anything, everything had to be asked to me with yes or no questions.
it happens when kids get scared, they dont know how to express themselves.

talk to his counsler and ask if they've noticed anything. "

" Please do a google search under "James Crist". He is the author of a great book my son (9 years old) used for anxiety. That one was called "What to do when you're scared and worried." If he has written one for depression, I imagine it will be just as helpful. It was a paperback from Amazon.com that was about $10. Excellent terms children could easily understand, and written excercises they could apply to daily life. "
