My son has been hospitalized 7 times in the last two years and he is 16 years old. I am looking into ECT for him as he is at high risk for succeeding with suicide. He told me he "craves" to kill himself and I believe him.

What should I do?

" I don't know much about it, but he needs to be hospitalized in my opinion. That would be quite expensive. The only way to get that done if you cannot afford it might be to have him legally committed to a State hospital .. but not sure that is possible. I think some States shut down their mental hospitals.

ECT may actually be very helpful, but you should ONLY take a doctor's advice on this. "

" There are a lot of Psychodynamics that need to be examined about him.

ECT is effective, but with side effects.

I don't think this is a long term solution for him. "

" I had ECT, and would have it again. There are some side effects, but if it works, it is good. "

" Best is immediate hospitalization. ECT is something you need to research. I have friends who have had it with mixed success. Find out all you can, and try to have your son's consent to it if you decide to go with it. Strong support for you from me in what is sure to be a difficult decision. And a big hugg for your son. And peace for his heart. "

" I don't mean to sound negative, but a good friend of mine had ECT because he suicidal all the time. After he had them, he wasn't suicidal anymore, but he was mean and not himself...it changed his personality. Good Luck "

" I had ECT's done but the doctor worned my family that it would work only on people that had depression. It does not work on people with Borderline Personality Disorder and that is what I have. I'm still fighting it for the last 36 months I've been in the physic word 19 times with overdosing. "
