I am sorely tempted to go and try to get a job at one of the many stores whose employees will be on strike shortly in my local area.
Two major grocery stores (union members) are going to strike...it looks imminent anyway. that's a lot of positions that'll need to be filled in order to operate for these stores...... My conscience is tapping on the front of my skull though, when I consider it. Would it be wrong to take advantage of this possible opportunity? Posted on 11/08/09, 08:11 pm |

In a word...no. Hey, you're just out filling out job applications, right? So who's gonna suffer if you get a job? These are not good times for people to be out there on strike. Sorry if they're not being treated as well as they'd like, but their timing is pretty bad, IMO.

I know EXACTLY what you are feeling, you got a right to work just like anyone else, I am working class,Unions had there place in society when workplace conditions were bad, now with all the federal and local guidelines employers are required to follow its hard to find truly unacceptable work environment, nowadays strikes are just legalize extortion, dont hang your head for trying to better yourself,
good luck!

very odd time to complaining about what they got. not that they havent the right, but with so many pple without work, seems not the best time. i suppose they assume they will come to come agreement and it will be short lived. no its not wrong to call and ask if they will be taking applications should they strike, id call first, as you might get some idea, before you go over.
would one of the chains be safeway? i know a guy that works for them out in az.

I think it is an opportunity that you should most definitely jump on!
If you think about it, all jobs are pretty much that way, someone was let go and there position is now open. You are just taking that spot and have nothing to feel bad about. Good Luck!

Strike breakers are called scum in the UK. But work is work and is rewarded.
Take advantage of it. Its the capitalist way

tbh baz, a lot of the strikers have been called scum around the UK lately as well, in addition to many other names. i have massive issues with the postal strike (checks and a credit card that were sent from the US, tracked as far as the UK and are still missing and affecting my finances)and the Leeds bin men strike (a friend is having to leave poison all around and make her kids stay inside thanks to the rodents brought out by the 9 weeks of trash left to rot by them). and given that i tend to agree with reply # 4, it is their bad for walking out and leaving a job unattended for someone else to swoop in and take it.

The stores are Safeway and Fry's...two of the largest chains we have here.
I'm gonna do it.....although I will have to check and see, when the strike ends...will they be canning us newcomers and rehiring the old ones..... Thanks for the replies!
