I have a 15 page research paper worth 35% of a final grade due in less than 2 weeks.. a presentation with a written (4 pgs) and oral component in a week and a half worht 25% of a final grade.. a law assignment worth 20% of a final grade due in 3 weeks.. a simulation exercise in 3 weeks worth 15% of a final grade.. and a 10 page paper worth 15% of a grade as well as a 25 page research paper worth 50% of a final grade both due in 1 month.
My fucking boss has me scheduled to work 5 days this week, including a split shift on sunday meaning the entire day is swallowed up. I asked him after he put the last schedule up to drop me down to a couple nights a week. I'm fucked. I am royally fucking fucked! This is humanly impossible to manage and I am freaking the fuck out. I can't even concentrate on anything right now because I am crying because I am so fucking stressed out. I am tempted to quit my job but I'm worried about not being able to get it back or find another one when I want to start working again and I really can't afford to not have an income as I am barely scraping by as it is.. I have just enough left on my credit line for one more month's rent and my student loan still hasn't come in... I don't know what to do I am so worried and stressed right now it is making me sick.. I've had a stomach ache for like a week and headaches and I've been dead tired from staying up late and not being able to sleep. If things get any crazier I know I'm going to end up having another nervous breakdown and I really don't want that.. I haven't had one in almost a year and I would like to keep it that way.... but I can already feel one coming on Posted on 11/06/09, 02:11 pm |

I've texted all the girls from work trying to get someone to take a couple of those shifts.. just crossing my fingers that they will... and really hoping that when I go to work tonight my boss hasn't put up the next schedule and still has the availability sheet up so I can X off a shit load of time... .

Can you get a letter from your Dr. to say you need to have a few days off for stress / health related reasons? They may be able to help that way.

That may be possible. If I can't get some of my shifts covered, that will be my next recourse.
I will also be speaking with my prof for the class with the 25 pager, because he had handed our paper proposals back about a week late and he had said that he may consider giving individual students an extension if we come talk to him and describe the situation we are in. He seems like a very accommodating man, so I have the feeling he may give me an extra couple days if I talk to him and explain my financial, work, and transportation situation (I rely on transit so a good hour and a half of my day is eaten up going back and forth to school and every time I work at least 2.5 to 3 hours)

can't you just tell him you asked for 2 nights only and can not do half of those shifts? explain the school load and see if that helps. he is a human being, right?

the doctors note is a good idea, one the boss cant just blow off either.
also if you get that, show it to your professors, i would go talk to all of them. focus on your health matters more than financial or other factors. sometimes instructors can be hard, when it comes to assignments, but fighting illness is a much more a valid reason to some than working to much or being over stretched from both. you know how some of the pompous types can be. i know how it is to have to much like that. but after speaking with your profs, you need to plan your homework time, prioritizing and then working on only that one assignment till its done. ive been to graduate school, went straight through summers and all and worked at least part time too, so i understand the boat you are in now. if worst comes to worst, and you wouldnt finish, some profs used to give incompletes for the course, rather than a bad grade, that way the student had time to finish what needed to be done. as a last resort that may also be a possibility. but just go chat with them all first. the docs note would be a good bit of help, try to get that first. good luck

I think venting was a good place to start and the list of actions you've come up with to tackle the situation and relieve your stress is great. I know it's hard - that's how I ended up in such a huge rut recently, but you're doing the right thing by being proactive. Try not to think of the worst case for all of these things at once because it is overwhelming and even more stressful. Try to focus on what you can do and just take off the bite-sized pieces. Good luck. Kudos for trying to fix it before it becomes a train wreck. Huge hugs.

Thanks everyone for the support and the advice.
I`m feeling a little more calmed down now. It`s definitely not a good idea to be thinking about all of this stuff at once. I totally agree that I need to worry about one thing at a time. I`ve gone through my planner and set specific goals to be reached each day for the next month and as long as I stick to that plan I should be able to get everything done. It will be crazy, and I will probably be completely exhausted by the time December rolls around, but I think I can do this. I am going to try to take a week off work not this coming week (cuz the schedule is already up) but next week, and then again the week before those final two papers are due I will try to take a week or at least a good 3-4 days straight off.

That's great and thinking ahead to taking time off is really smart. Despite how much you need to get done, if you don't take time for yourself, you won't be able to get those things done in an effective way. And remember, you have the list, but you have to be flexible with yourself. Don't beat yourself up if things go a little off. You can get through it. Bite-sized pieces.
Good luck!
