I've been struggling for a few years now, just over four. At first it was major depression, then it was a 2 year spell of dysthymia AND major depression and over the past 18 months I seem to be all over the place, I wouldn't know where to put myself. Psychiatrists are hesitant to diagnose me with anything and one has recently prescribed Fluoxetine and Epilim. I'm still confused as to why I need a mood stabalizer if she didn't say I had bipolar disorder, but oh well, I guess she had her reasons.
All I can say is that off the medication I had days where I felt like everything was going to turn out great and now on the medication I have no more of those days, just depression, endless nagging depression. I should probably give the medication more time to work but I'm really angry that it's taken away my only good days. I guess that staying awake for days at a time wasn't normal, but at least I wasn't wishing death upon myself like I am right now. I doubt that I'm ever going to get rid of this thing that's ruining me, or maybe I'm just ruining myself. Some days, throwing myself in front of a train seems too easy. Posted on 11/05/09, 06:11 am |

Hi and welcome to DS! Lots of good people here, you've already met a few.
By all means get a second (or third or ... ) opinion. It is YOU that is at stake, and you deserve doctors who can tell you the WHYs behind things. Well, they don't always know why, but in those cases they should tell you what they do know! Again welcome!

Hi , I am brand new to this group as well. I hope that it helps us. My depression is persistant but it varies in it's severity; sometimes it is hardly noticeable and other times I am almost overcome by it. After years of wishing it to go away, I now realize that I have to accept it and then live proactively to keep it at bay. Good luck to you. Just the act of taking action (joining this online support group) has already helped me to feel a little happier.

I have had depression for years and antidepressants have helped in the past. With my recent bout, the doctor added a mood stabilizer (which I've never been on either) as well. He doesn't think I'm bipolar but there is history in my family. He explained that the new thinking in psychiatry is that the mood stabilizers often have fewer side effects than the antidepressants and may help to stave off future episodes of depression. I think he wants to get me out of my current depression and them see if I can't just be treated on the mood stabilizer alone.
I wonder if your "good days" before were manic at all? Did your doctor say anything about that? It takes a while for meds to stabilize. The first 2-3 weeks I really didn't see much difference, though I am starting to see a difference now and it's around 3-4 weeks. Good luck. And definitely find a doc you like/feel comfortable with.

Thanks all for welcoming me.
I've got an appointment in a couple of weeks with another psychiatrist just to check how meds are going, how my mood is etc. It will be a different one than I saw last time so I'll ask about the medication while I'm there. depressiontini: The doctor asked me if I had ever been manic but since I don't really know I just said I didn't think so.

My two dogs are superior antidepresants to TCAs, SSRIs, SNRIs and other meds I've tried. I can't take them everywhere with me though. More medicine merry-go-rounding for me!
