Discussion:
Make Marijuana legal?

I know that people who use or want to use pot want it legal. But since that seems to be a minority position in society I am interested in the opinions of people who do NOT want to use it.

Do you think it should remain illegal, should it be made legal because people want to use it???

As for me, I see too many parallels between pot and prohibition. Prohibition only made the alcohol scene worse (but organized crime really loved it). The marijuana trade puts a lot of money in the wrong hands (organized crime).

And this, a family member was at a conference where they were talking about pot. Somebody went out and purchased some random samples, then the samples were analyzed for presence of pesticides and other substances that are tightly controlled in legal agricultural products.

The results were alarming, lots of nasty stuff was in the samples!

SO I say legalize it. Give it quality standards. Tax it. Make people responsible for things they do while high (like people are responsible for things they do drunk), and move on.

" I know this is for those who do NOT smoke it but i do agree it should be legal. If we grow it ourselves, there is none of the pestcides in it.

Also, i have done some purrty STUPID & dangerous things while drunk but NEVER while i was high. "

" It has recently had a scientific study in the UK for our government to re classify it. Most scientists and doctors say it is far less harmful then binge drinking or regularly smoking cigarettes.
Also 1 ecstacy tablet is less harmful that a night out drinking heavily every week.
I have always thought that harder drugs should be prescribed to addicts and they go into rehab when spaces are available.
This would put an end to the drug trade and all the crime that goes with it.
Our dear Gordon Brown has chosen to ignore these scientific experts and upped the classification.
It's not the solution in my opinion. "

" I think alcohol is a MUCH greater problem than marijuana ... so ... at least make marijuana as 'legal' as alcohol is.

The criminalization of marijuana has caused MANY more problems than the legalization of marijuana would cause.

and I do not use marijuana ... my opinion is a matter of principle. "

" I used to smoke a crazy amount of pot a few years back, and what I always found was that I was a lot more hestitant to drive after smoking than I was driving after a couple of drinks.

I say legalize it, already. Alcohol is so goddamn potent and deadly, and when do you you ever hear of someone getting into a car wreck because of pot consumption? NEVER.

Ugh. "

" Legalising it has its bonuses but sadly, some of the ceremony related to the drug would be lost.
We live in a corporate age. Legal weed would come in dazzling packets with names like Stay high and Buzzsticks.
That would kill alot of it for me.
Plus, the studies that have been done show some people are more effected by the potential for psychosis than others. Regulated weed may exist but I see it unleashing a new rash of problems.

It would be pull in extra taxes and that could help but given the amount of other problems it could create, the taxes would not be noticed due to the extra cost.
Saying that, the war on drugs is wasteful and pointless.
In the UK, police will go all out to break up grow houses because a weed conviction is an easy drugs bust. They tend to leave coke dealers alone.

I like my weed, I like the process to get the weed.

Its not actually legal in the Netherlands, it is tolerated. It is everywhere and easily available but the dutch have one of the highest Meth and coke problems in europe.
If I could get weed with no problems then I would never be sober, in much the same way as an alcoholic. "

" i say legalize it for medical use . . . i know i am stingy LOL.

but the issue itself, that i find with Marijuana is that it just seems realy risky in my opinion.

now i am not saying that if you are caught with weed (i.e addict) you go to jail or anything like that. the dealers and smugglers should, the addict should be court ordered rehab.

though back to the main subject, i just see it as a rather . . . i don't know, risk issue. i do think it should be legalized for medical issues, and allowing people to have it for those issues, becuase it helps with pain et cetera. but i don't think its nessicary to see kids buying "blueberry flavored Weedies,"

alcohol i admit is jut as bad. no doubt about it. i am not weed frienyl, but weed tolerant, if it is used in the right way.

a bunch of 13 year old sitting in a basment getting high, sitting in the basment and watching television, like mindless zombies just strikes me as just as a problem as if they do the same thing if it is legal. the only difference is the money goes to two different organiziations. Crime or Corporate.

the other thing is, if we legalize Marijunna how long until we legalize, cocain? crack? cystal meth? heroine? "

" it should be legal. To many law enforcement dollars are used catching people smoking pot (& it's not as bad as liquor). We could also tax it (Alabama has an ingenious registration/taxation program so they are already starting to get revenue!). Then gov't will have more money to help people down and out. "
