For those of you who write, what do you do to overcome writers block?
It has been brutal for me this year so far. I really don't know what I can try to make the creativity flow....generally my situation as of late has been the ideal situation to whip out writing after writing....but.....nothing. Thanks for any light you can shed or help you can give me :) Posted on 07/05/09, 05:07 pm |

hmmm when i write, and i have writer's block, i try to get my mind as relaxed as possible...take a break, try not to think about writing and then when your mind is not strained on it, then try and start writing again. or if you know what you are gonna write about, then turn to someone else for the first paragraph, then after that take off with it.. lol. good luck hun.

well, writer's block is tough once you become mired in it.
I find that if I stop trying to write, and read for a few days, I get inspired that way... There is a good book by Stephen King called "On Writing" which has been valuable to me. good luck hon, hope the inspiration comes to you soon!

Yeah reading definitely helps. I'm writing a book and it is fucking hard and I've gotten stuck in writers block a few times. Here's a list of what helped me. Hopefully it will be helpful to you:
Keep a little notebook with you at all times so if inspiration hits you can note it down. If you're struggling with a certain part then move forward, write a chapter that has been forming in your mind and then link together. Don't beat yourself up or over think it. sometimes the brain just needs a little rest before it can continue with something as difficult as creative writing. Read some novice work posted on the internet, it can inspire you. Chill out and watch some films that are related to the genre of your piece. Free write. Open a blank document and write any old crap, even if it is nonsensical. It will get you in the writing frame of mind. Good luck hun.

Driving to someplace peaceful helps free up my stuck brain gears...
I loved Uhm's suggestions. The same are used if I experience artistic block. Keeping something to write in, a small notebook, helps tons. Even a word or two can spark your memory, as to what you wanted to say....

Thanks guys!
Yeah Uhm, I do a number of the things you mentioned actually. I always have a little notebook and pen...if I don't there is a pen in the car and scraps of paper I write on...I wrote a poem once on a WalMart receipt LOL! It was hard to make out but I did it :P I also free write and I also read to help get my juices flowing....nothin'. It's so frustrating! I am going to keep this post in favorites you guys so I can refer back if there are more suggestions...thank you everyone! *Hugs*
