I agree it doesn't work for all , to many variables with mental illness, Ie, traumatic brain injuries , BP things like that. However it can help with getting through some rough times or with situational depression , and with the combination of meds . It is just a tool .

The things is...you have to believe the positive thoughts, (they ARE true).
If you just repeat by rote and don't take it in and believe it, then you will not get as much benefit from it, naturally. indeed, variables in symptoms and the exact nature of your brain misfirings makes a difference. Good information! *bump*

I think that's the problem I'm having right now...I am having trouble believing the positive things I try to tell myself. I won't stop trying but it is discouraging...

In my ptsd group the first thing they have you do is affirmatioons and to be honest they didn't work that well for me either.
I just couldn't start beliving them about myself just from writing them down. But when I started dbt group and had to actually put coping skills and such into action, I started to see more of the positives in myself. Do I always see myself in a positive light, Nope. Still working on issues there. At least now if I were to read such affirmations I would be more likely to consider them and not just discount them right off the bat.
