I posted in the advice section but haven't heard back from anyone. I really don't know what to do. My daughter has been showing signs of depression since October. I have an appt for her with her doctor on thursday, but she doesn't want to go to school at all right now. She is 14. Should I make her go??? She is in tears and says she wants to be home schooled.

" I think the question is what triggered your daughter's depression and how bad is it?

Definitely isolation would not help her but I think people aren't responding because they don't have enough information to give good advice to you. "

" My daughter is 14 years old and I have noticed symptoms of depression since October. We took a trip together over Christmas break and I was hoping things would get better for her. But she is SEVERLY depressed and when I asked her about suicidal thoughts she wouldn't look at me. She is crying and crying and NOTHING like the girl I new a year ago. I am SO very worried about her!!! I have an appt with her PCP doctor on Thursday and I am going to call around to counselor's to try to find one tomorrow that can see her, but I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO UNTIL THEN! She missed school today and when I talked to her about going tomorrow she says she wants to be home schooled and is in tears. DO I LET HER STAY HOME UNTIL WE GET THINGS FIGURED OUT OR DO I MAKE HER GO???? I'm a single mom of 4. I don't have anyone to ask or turn to!

Just for added info: until this year she wouldn't miss a day of school for anything and was at the top of her class.

HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

above is what I posted in the advice column. She was having trouble at school in the fall, with a couple of girls who were harassing her. We tried to work it out with the school, but it didn't stop. She then decided she wanted to switch schools, so we did and that is where she is now. She has only been there a month, but the depression has been showing signs since October.

I think I am somewhat to blame because we have moved so many times. Her dad is an alcoholic, her step-father is a compulsive gambler, and we are currently living in my parent's basement, me, her, and her 3 little brothers. She sees me struggling with depression and trying to raise the 4 of them on my own, and trying to sort my life out from bad decisions I have made. It is a BIG HUGE mess! "

" get her into counselling now. and please do not take this as an attack since it sounds like you are starting to do this already.....but sort your life too and start making decisions that are healthy for your kids i.e. no addicted or abusive men....or perhaps no men at all till you sort a solid stable life for you and your kids again. i understand it is lonely being a mom first and someone's special someone second but it is the best way for kids. they should not even know you have a date till it is serious in my opinion cause introducing the casual dates to them creates chaos to kids. " Ccan you stay home with her til the appt if she does not go to school? Theres a reason for the crying but no way to tell what it is without her opening up to someone (you or someone else).
Do any of her brothers/sisters go to the same school? maybe they can offer some insight.
I do hope it turns out alright. My heart goes out to you "
