I found out today that after countless blood tests recently.. I am to have more because my glucose levels are off the scale and my doctor says I am most probably diabetic..
my cholesterol level is 10 for which I've been given a months supply of 'statins' I have to have another set of tests in a month before he will confirm anything.. I am not overweight and eat healthy food.. I never eat fried food or red meat or takeaways.. he didn't say if he thinks I am type 1 or 2 and I was too shocked to ask him.. I have high blood pressure and take beta blockers for that.. do I need to be worried? Posted on 11/19/08, 04:11 pm |

Does anyone else in your family have it? Its hereditary. My grandpa had it, my mom has it, my sister and my niece. Dont worry til you find out more information from your doctor. Sounds like your diet is good. I know with my mom she cant eat certain fruits like grapes, even carrots have sugar. Natural sugars. Your doctor will discuss things with you. Hope for a good result for you though

I am type 2 diabetic and am currently taking Glipizide 2 times a day, once with breakfast and one with dinner. If I skip then my blood sugar goes up. Do you have a blood test meter? You need to test daily to keep tract of if your blood sugar is up. I find that when it is then I don't feel well. You have to read the sugar content on package labels. I also have high blood pressure, it runs in my family. I have to take Coreg and two other meds for that and watch my sodium intake. Be sure to keep taking your meds whether you feel good or not.

I think your doctor and you need to talk a lot more. He or she should have spent more time talking to you about this and what you need to do about it, give you some info.

You don't need to be worried; just informed.
You could be diagnosed type I or type II diabetic, but at this point, too soon to tell. There is a "fair" chance you are not. Apparently you show at least high blood sugar after a battery of blood tests. This does NOT guarantee you are a diabetic. It certainly does cause suspicion though, and they will find out. The main thing I want you to know is that if you are diagnosed as having either I or II, it is treatable and you can have a quite "normal" life. Beyond that, if not treated, you can have a quite miserable life. Untreated diabetes results in blindness, heart congestion/failure, lower extremity amputation(s), kidney failure, and/or death. The result can be any or all of the above and the suffering goes on for years. I am not trying to frighten you. The prevention of all these things is to get and maintain proper treatment. IF diagnosed, .. take your treatment program very seriously and follow it to the letter ... and being diabetic can be a relatively minor "inconvenience" rather than the other extreme. Do this, and you will be fine.
