Discussion:
anti depressant meds?

I have been thinking about getting some meds to help with my depression. Sometimes it gets so bad I'll stay in bed for days and sometimes I'll skip my classes all together. I feel nothing gets done, but the slightest contact with anyone would make feel worse or cry. I'm not sure where to start or what I should do about meds. Has anyone taken them, if so, is it safe? Does it really work? What kind should I get?

" medication is the primary treatment for depression. Anyone with major depression really has no alternative .. in my opinion. Medication is proven effective in treating it.

Only a trained medical professional can make the assessment and prescribe what is best for you. Discuss your 'mood' issues with your doctor and ask about a course of treatment with medication.

It is pretty much essential. "

" Meds. really help me! Nothing can take our illlness away, but, I feel I now have a better quality of life. You need to see an professional to see what meds, are going to help you. Zoloft really helped me to get out of bed, and finish my degree! I am on four different meds. You have to find out what is good for you. Your doctor will help you with that. You are not alone! If you decide to go the meds. way, you have to give them a chance to work. It's just a matter of what works for you. Once you find what meds. are right for you,you will be surprised how better you will start to feel.... Good luck, and be strong, like I said before, you are not alone! Take care of yourself. "

" I've taken two types of anti-depressants, and neither helped. They can cause side effects, but they don't affect every person in the same way. They can cause sexual dysfunction while on them. For me, they made my anxiety even worse. Some people find them helpful, though. Supposedly, you have to try several types to find one that works for you based on your genetics. Some research indicates that they're ineffective, however. Your doctor will likely prescribe one for you. A practitioner saw recently admitted to me that it's a trial-and-error process, but it seems like doctors often choose the type that is marketed most to them first, and some are adamant about not trying any others. " I wish there were enough therapists and time to help everyone who suffers from depression without resorting to meds, but there aren't. In addition, I believe there is a place for meds as sometimes we get so low talking won't cut it. Like ImmortalKaim says, some don't work and you will probably get offered the drug-of-the-moment as a starting point.

I'm sorry, that sounds really negative!! Meds have helped me regain my sanity and return to a normal life; without them I don't know where I would be now. Everyone's different, and one drug doesn't fit all. I started with Prozac, which was great, but it stopped working eventually. There are sometimes side-effects which are worse in the first 10 to 14 days but if you can get through that time it's a relatively gentle drug.

Sertraline didn't work for me but my 18 year old son is doing well on it. Mirtazapine left me like a Zombie!! Venlafaxine worked really well as an antidepressant but the side effects are pretty vile. So there you are, one size definitely doesn't fit all. But the symptoms you're describing indicate a pretty severe depression so you need something to help you out. Meds can help you start to reclaim your brain and gently get your life back on track. Good luck. "

" I take them and they work for me. I still have my good days and bad days but I am now able to get out of the bed and not thinking of ways to kill myself.

If you want to know about meds go see a pdoc or have your gp send you to some one. Some people just get them from their gp. I did for years. I have to admit though, the pdoc helps more. Good luck to you. Taking or not taking meds is a personal decision but you will find that most of us on here are on meds. "
