hi, for about a month a little green bird, with greyish wings has been at my bedroom window. he keeps banging his little beak at the glass several times, especially when he hears noise. he does this more when he hears activity inside. i put a cage outside, andsome parakeet food, but he's not a parakeet.
does anyone know what kind of birdi he might be? what should i do w/ him? i'm afraid he might die in the winter? and that he might eentually crack his beak from pecking at the glass. Posted on 06/20/12, 09:54 am |

Possibilities are huge. Sounds like a 'tamed' bird. He will not harm himself by tapping on the window. He very likely will eat the parakeet food. If previously someone's pet, will probably not survive .. predator, weather, natural senses for food/water .. are factors against him. If I were you, I would see if he would perch on your finger. If he does .. definitely a prior pet. At that point, you should be able to cage him ... and become a 'bird lady' .... in rescue.

You could open your window and lure him in.

Take a picture of the bird and ask at a local pet shop that sells birds. Some birds are protected and if you get caught with them there can be huge fines.

I agree with WanderingVet.
He won't break his beak from pecking the glass, and he probably is a tame bird. He will not know how to survive out there. Some birds are illegal for various reasons, often stupid reasons. In many states, you're not allowed to have quaker parrots. They're legal in Texas, so I used to have one before he escaped. You should do what PepperMan says, so you don't get in trouble for having an illegal bird. You said it's not a parakeet? Well, parrotlets look somewhat similar to parakeets, I guess, and some can be green with gray wings. http://www.google.com/imgres?start=...:&imgrefurl=http://www.fluffies.org/neotropical...://www.fluffies.org/PATW022.jpg&...:429,r:5,s:196,i:20&tx=109&ty=25 http://www.google.com/imgres?start=...:&imgrefurl=http://bandbparrotlets.com/prices.h...://bandbparrotlets.com/images/turquo...:429,r:7,s:392,i:27&tx=82&ty=70

There are some little green characters that are now loose and breeding in my state. They don't appear to be doing any great environmental damage but I don't know what native species they may have displaced.
He may well be a pet. But be careful in trying to handle any bird. Some of these suckers can inflict a nasty bite. I had a cockateil that never got used to being handled. I had to wear gloves to keep my fingers safe. Remember that some of these birds can crack open very tough seeds with their beaks. So please be careful for your sake and the birds sake as well.
