Depresssed about turning 24

My birthday is tomorrow and I am not happy about it at all. I feel like I haven't even come close to enjoying my 18th-23rd years the way most people do and I feel like I am not at the same "life stage" as people my age. When I see 20-21 year olds, I feel like I can relate to them like they are my age. I am nowhere near the point where I will look at 20 year old girls and think "oh they're too young for me, they're just kids".
I think I would give almost anything to be 21 or 22 again. I really feel like I'm over the hill. Posted on 04/14/12, 08:34 pm |

There is joy in you somewhere. It's in everybody.
See your avi? That's one of the cutest I've seen. No bullshit. There is something bright and fun in you. You just seem intent on burying it under mountains of self-destructive thinking. FUCK what you think you "should" be feeling. FUCK what you think your relationships "should" be like. FUCK THINKING. Just live, dude. It's all any of us have got. Enjoy what's here. We're not promised anything beyond that, in this life. If that sounded mean, I really do mean it in the most sincere and kind way.

Just a quick look into my life and note the ages.
23 met girl ...at 25 married girl at 27 buried my first child...(was blamed for and felt guilty about it for 20 years). Almost buried my 3rd child at 32. FINALLY got out of abusive relationship at 45... found love at 46 here on DS and been going strong for the last 4 years to the age of 50. Just a question...Do you drive a car or ride a motorcycle? If you do then I will ask another question...When you drive do you exclusively look in the rear view mirror or do you look at the road ahead? Most (I hope ALL) people look at where they are going ...not where they have been. If you constantly look in the mirror you are going to crash into something. Well my friend life is the exact same thing as driving. Keep looking where youve been and you will crash! And like a car life is not perfect and it does require an oil change every so often and you have to expect a break down every once in a while. Its time to give your tires a kick...get off the soft shoulder and drive!!

Aw, hell, 24 is no big deal. Try turning 44!
24 WAS the age, for me, however, when my metabolism started slowing down, and, yes, it was depressing, as well as was a sobering reminder of my own mortality. Prior to that, I could eat whatever junk food I wanted, and I felt sloggy, but I didn't gain weight. You talk about 21-24 being a humongous age gap. I'm sure it feels that way at that age. Try turning 40. The difference between 21-24 will feel like nothing. You're as old as you FEEL. How old do you FEEL? What would it take to make you feel younger? For me, the answer is vigorous physical exercise. Are you exercising? The mind is an important organ to exercise too. Are you actively looking for new things to learn? And I don't know where you get the idea that everyone 21 and younger is as happy as a clam. I'm sure there are many people that age and younger who are quite miserable. Clint Eastwood's dad told him, at a very early age, if you're not progressing, you're decaying. Look at Clint: 80 and he's on high-speed cruise control, developing and cranking out one movie a year. The man loves his work, telling stories in cinema, and he loves his wife, who I might add, is probably half his age lol. Money helps. Money is earned, of course, through work. Maybe you're just in a rut in college. I don't know what you're majoring in, but many majors are largely theory and fluff that seems to have no practical application, and, of course, doesn't generate a paycheck. Maybe look into changing majors if you're not happy in what you're studying? How far along are you in your degree?

I find what helps me combat depression is focusing on things that are funny.
In the "where are they now" file, I just watched the movie American Reunion, the sequel to the popular American Pie trilogy, and, as vulgar as the story is, and as dysfunctional as those characters are, it's kind of comforting to see that time and circumstances change, but those people in the "class of '99" remain the same, just a little physically heavier, the guys with more facial and body hair lol. Jim is a bit more settled within himself, but neurotic as ever about his marriage. Stifler is as obnoxious as ever, still thinks he's in high school, misses his buds, who begrudgingly tolerate his obnoxiousness, because he does bring a lot of fun into their lives. Kev is still grappling with his feelings toward Vicki, despite the fact that he's now married to someone else. Oz still has feelings for Heather. Jim's dad, mourning the death of his wife, finds a new mate in the form of Stifler's mom. Nadia has found her geek man that she was looking for in Pie 2. Even the Sherminator gets his mojo back.

babagtfoi, I don't know if that was meant to be funny, but it was actually rude.
And how do I "act like I'm 12"? Honestly, it's that whole attitude that is the problem. This idea that you're supposed to be a certain way when you're at a certain age. I still want to live the life of a college aged kid, and I don't see why there should be anything wrong with that. I didn't get to date the way people do in college, so I don't think it's fair that society says it would be "immature" for me to still seek out these kinds of relationships just because I am 24. What's a few more years on the earth anyways? I wish people would just let everyone live however they want to live and not judge.

Oh and it's also a sexist double standard. If I was a girl, it would be considered totally normal to vent my feelings like this, but when a guy gets older he is a "man" so he is supposed to be tough and look for for support no matter how bad things are. It's really not surprising that all the people out there who shoot up their schools and blow themselves up are men.
