Has anyone tried this? One of my friends really wants me to try it because she thinks part of my problem is my low conception of myself...
I've tried other forms of therapy and they really haven't helped me... I know different people experience different things and have success with different things, I just don't know too much about it and I was wondering if anyone had success with it... Posted on 10/22/07, 01:10 pm |

I think it works 100%. I would recommend it.
Good luck!

Thanks for the imput. I really appreciate it... I'm just nervous because it will go under my insurance and I don't want my parents to find out that I am going to therapy again...

Cognitive Behavioral therapy is a popular form of psychotherapy these days. It's based on the premised of your thoughts affecting your feelings and your behaviors: You want to change how you feel, then change how you think.
Such as if you don't want to feel bad about yourself, then don't think negative thoughts about yourself. That's a simplistic way of explaining it, but I think you get what I mean. It works great for many people because it's action oriented, giving you control over your feelings by controlling your thoughts and actions instead of focusing on your feelings. Insurance companies really like it too because it's usually more helpful in a shorter treatment time.

I did it on my own with my OCD triggers. I found it very successful, but It did take me some time. I don't know how it would work with depression, but good luck. Every little thing helps.

Thanks JTLauder. I'm not as worried about whether or not my insurance will cover it... It's that I'm still a student and am under my parents insurance... I don't think I could pay for it by myself out of pocket, but if insurance covers it it will come on the bill, and I'll have a ton of explaining to do...

I am doing it, I think it works but it takes time and it is really something you have to work at. I think it vaires from person to person depending on your own situation.
It has helped me in many ways, I have been going through the PTSD crap from my past and while it is currently causing more depression I know that getting it all out will make it better in the long run so I am sticking with it. If you decide to do it make sure you have a therapist that you are really connected too. It helps if you can be open with them because the more open you are the better they know you and can help you. Good luck to you in whatever method you go with.

I hate to sound a negative note, but it may depend on what caused your depression. If your depression is pathological or inherited (mine is inherited), CBT can help you to cope with it better and even feel somewhat better, but it won't actually get rid of the depression. If your depression arose from some situation or a set of experiences in your life, there's a better chance that CBT will make a major difference. I'd suggest you go into it looking not for a cure but for improvement, and see what good you can get out of it. Good luck with it!

I'm just being assessed to see what CBT path is the one I need the most. Looks like its my health anxiety that we are gonna be working on. I've heard good reports about it.
