My sister has been threatening suicide and refuses to see a mental health professional. She explains that if the police are called she will surely do so. We, as a family, are so lost for what to do. Any direction would be much appreciated.

I think she is playing a power game, putting the family in an impossible position. I don't know WHY she is playing this game, but she is.
If you (or anyone else) thinks she will hurt herself, call 911 immediately. If she will not get help, the next time she threatens, hang up on her if by phone then call 911. Hard to do, of course. If she threatens directly, tell her not to ever threaten that to you again (and if you think she will harm herself, call 911). The family has to put a stop to her threatening ... it gives her too much irrational control. It is possible the family can have her comitted as being a danger to herself,.. but that would take a LOT of legal advice first. Point is though, that may be just what she needs.

sounds like ur sister is putting u all in a very delicate and hard situation.
is she open with u about why she feels this way? talk to her get her to open up to u or someone else in the family she is close too. you may have "to be cruel to be kind" and call the authorities and explain she has threated to commit suicide if the intervine an the should no the best way to act. i would'nt want to be in your situation good luck youl need it. One of the hits says:
"Prevention Many people who attempt suicide talk about it before making the attempt. Sometimes, simply talking to a sympathetic, nonjudgmental listener is enough to prevent the person from attempting suicide. For this reason suicide prevention centers have telephone "hotline" services. Again, do not ignore a suicide threat or attempted suicide. As with any other type of emergency, it is best to immediately call the local emergency number (such as 911). Do not leave the person alone even after phone contact with an appropriate professional has been made. http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus... So my advice MAY BE WRONG!!!
