I can't believe I found this group!!!! I've been postponing the dentist for years. I'm at the point now that I need to go. I've got nearly constant aching in my lower jaw and plan to make an appointment. The dentist I'm going to see offers sedation, but I'm even afraid to go to that. The last dentist visit I had was just for a filling. I'm not so worried about the shots and fillings, but the gagging. I'm difficult to numb on my bottom gums so they use extra...my tongue gets numb too. So numb that any time the dentist moves my tongue I gag. So the dentist started to get frustrated, stomped his feet around and left me there. I was completely humiliated and the nurse said "you can't help it and he can't help it". I was even more humiliated when tears started to run down my face. Then he comes back and orders the nurse to get an amalgum (not sure) and said "I guess we'll just have to do this in a bath". never been back since.

" What a crappy dentist. I cry through most dental appointments also. I have found two really good dentists to work with. They are both female. Just call the dentist office and let them know how bad your anxiety is. They will be honest if the dentist is the right one for you. I also tried hypnosis and it worked to a certain extent. "

" wow very scary. i am a dental assistant and 1 outta 3 patients were gaggers. i didnt even have to touch them and just the thought of me having to do an impression or an xray would be enough to make them gag or even throw up, yep i seen it all chocolate cake, tuna, green stuff (who knows what she ate) lol.......

ask your dentist next time if they have the aresol (sp?) lidocane.....they can spray it (like hair spray) to the back of your throat without putting naything in your mouth. that should relax your gag reflex for a little while.

and i think you should get another dentist possibly if you dont feel comfortable. and i hope he still isnt using amalgum aka a silver filling. most dentist havent used that in YEARS.... they dont even teach how to do those in school anymore....

have you ever tried the lauging gas to calm down? "
