Greetings,

I just found out today that my Grandfather is moving from an independant living facility to an assisted living facility. He has been in the ER three times this past week. This is all that i know that this time. I did call him earlier today and he did know who I was but repeated everything that I said and cut the call short. He currently thinks that year is 1989.

I am in California and he is in Illinois. I am looking to book a flight to see him as soon as I can. I went to visit him two months ago and he seemed OK. I am wondering what my approximate time frame is till he forgets who I am.

Please any info or help would be appreciated. This info was just presented to me today. I had no idea how quickly dememtia presents itself.

Thank you,

Melissa

" here is a link to a great site that has time frames with the descriptions of stages. Obviously, these are averages and some live a long time within each stage. I'm going to guess based on what you have said that he is about Stage 6, that's where my husband is. "

" The sad and scary thing about this disease is - things can change suddenly. One day they just forget something or someone they have known forever. Or forget how to do something that is a part of daily life.
Today my husband forgot what his fork was for. He looked at it.. put it in one hand then the other.. turned it around a few times then handed it to me, and picked his fish up with his fingers and proceeded to eat.
We just can't predict the future with them. He may forget your name (or you) tomorrow, or could remember you until his last
breath.
Anyway, book your flight and enjoy some conversation while you can. "

" Thank you both for the information. Deborah, where is the link?

I talked with him yesterday and he knew who I was but repeated what I had said. It was strange to hear him like this, sad really as he has prided himself on the ability to learn new things and his love of research. My Grandmother died four years ago and they were married for 30+ years. I hope that he will always remember the love that they shared if nothing else.... love. "
