Advice:
how to motivate someone

Hi, My neighbor has vascular dementia and I help take care of her. I visit her twice a day M-F, make sure she eats, takes her medications and try to motivate her to do things. Besides me, she has a woman who comes in once a week and cleans house for her. I need to find something for her to do to take her mind off herself. All she wants to do is lay in bed and feel sorry for herself.

Thanks

" Does your neighbor have any company during the day? Her kids? Do they call or visit her?
How about family services? Is there an organization that will pick her up land take her to a centre where there are planned communal activities and socialization? Having dementia can be a very lonesome journey. Being around others about the same age and conditions is a good thing. Stimulation. Otherwise, why get up? "

" Jo's son is a truck driver. He calls her 3 times a day that I know of, and is home on the weekends taking care of her and the farm. One of her granddaughters oversees her meds, and visits once a week or so. There may be a group that will pick her up, but she won't go. She is too self conscious of her walker! We try to get her to come to our family dinner on Sunday, but she says she is imposing and won't do it more than once in a while. There is a coffee group that meets in our town, and she used to go to that every morning, now she won't even do that, and some of those women are ones she went to school with!! "
