steroid injection or nerve block

Does anyone know the difference between an epidural steroid injection and a nerve block. I had numerous epidurals in my cervical spine until they stopped working. Now, I have lumbar stenosis and am in terrible pain in my leg with the emg doctor saying I have L5 S1 compression. The doctor said, they might try a "Nerve Block." I am nervous about this because I recently had an epidural in my back for a bowel resection and they had to remove it in the recovery room due to pain and numbness in my right leg. The doctor said they are different. Has anyone gotten relief from one? I am desperate. Thanks. Mary Anne

" i have had DDD for a long time and in recent years have had what they call facet injections...they lasted around 8 mos. for me. i do not know if this helps you at all but i have the problem in my lower back and it has helped tremendously. they put you under to have this...or my dr. does...and it takes away a lot of the anxiety knowing this. God bless you....Dale...Brandon's Mom "

" I have had the Epidural for my lumbar and the Facet Joint I was not put under for etiher but given Valium or xanax for each. The ESI didn't work the facet gave me some relief but not much. My surgeon said today that there is not much of a difference between the FJI and the nerve blocks just where the injection is....I think the nerve block does just that...stop the nerve from sending pain signals..you'd have to ask him/her for more info though...good luck. " Thanks so much. I had a mini epidural in my doctor's office today. He said it should take the edge off. I am having Mohs surgery on Monday to remove a basal cell cancer from the corner of my eye and I was afraid I would be in agony with this leg and back. This surgery takes all day and you have to sit and wait an hour and 1/2 between each time they cut. Then, I made need a skin graft on Tuesday depending on how deep it is. So, I am glad I got the shot . Thanks so much for your help. I may look into the facet injections. This weather in the northeast is not helping - it is miserable here. Thanks again for your help!!! "

" My friend just had a never block done on one side and is going in a couple of weeks to get the other side, She said she feels a big difference and it works well. She was scared but said that it was not much different from the epidural procedure but the decrease in pain was great. Good luck! "

" Thanks so much for you advice. I hope you have a pain free weekend. It is so wet and cold here outside Philly. I think we are in for a bad winter. "

" I'm glad to read these replies because I may be facing similar injections in the C and T spine soon. Very severe pain that isn't helped by my current drugs. I'm so discouraged, because it never lets up. I would like to know if anyone has suffered side effects from spinal steroid injections. Thanks
Hugs, Sue "
