I became very ill last week and my boss suggested I go see the internist I have recently started seeing. Kind of weird, because my boss always thinks I "complain" about stuff. So I went to see him and he looked at me, left the room and came back in with a mask, paper gown, and a hat. Looked like he was going to perform surgery! I looked like death! Anyway, he drew some blood and ordered a CT of my head and chest as well as an Ultra Sound and CT of my abdomin. I haven't had the results of the later two but the CT of head and chest are clear. He drew some blood and the only thing I have heard is that my potassium was pretty low; it was about 2.5 when the normal is 3.6 He put me on a potassium supplement which hasn't made my muscle pain much better and said PUSH the bananas and orange juice. Which I am.

I guess my question is-- has this happened to anyone else?? Trying to avoid this in this disucussion group but I am a recovering bulimic of 2 years and was an active bulimic over 10. Oddly enough, my potassium levels never went low. Its actually not that easy to do! I have not been throwing up or had any bowel issues, either intentionally or otherwise and am quite confused! I have had a loss of appitite and haven't been eating too well- or much- but most of what I read about potassium said that it happens through vommiting and diarreah. Any of you expereinced this, wondering if it has to do with the medication, or maybe becuse I was sick??

" Have you increased your fluid intake a lot? Over-hydration causes me to get toe and muscle cramps at first - like when I'm trying to live healthy and drink my 8 - 8oz glass of h20 a day, I'll get toe cramps that are alleviated by eating high potassium foods. . Also exercise to the point of profuse sweating (or steambaths, overly long stays in a hot tub) can have an impact on your potassium levels, so any changes in the exercise department? "

" No I haven't changed my fluid or food intake, or my exercise. However, one of my personal side effects from the coumadin has been horrible appetite disturbance so since august I haven't been eating nearly as much as usual. "

" Last summer I had a staph infection and went to the hosp to get it looked at and they said my pottasium levels were low too, had to get an IV of it and then put on pottasium pills for three days. I never knew why either. Very weird.....

Also I remember the last day I took my pottasium pill my heart beat went out of whack (way too fast) and I almost went to the ER but never did because it subsided within an hour. Just another mystery my body likes to give me.... "

" My body has been doing crazy things too, I had my CT of my head and chest which I was told came back normal, and when I saw the internist he said they said it came back normal because there were no clots (I went there because of how sick I felt Friday, which was apprently because of my potassium, and he did CT's, MRI's and ultrasounds, I don't know!?!?) but they found a nodule in my lung. He said it was a fluke, they weren't looking for it but there it was. Anyone else ever have that. WHAT IS WRONG WITH MY BODY!!!! "

" A good friend of mine has a nodule on her lung - has been aware of it for many years now. What they did with her is check it every 6 months. Once they determined it wasn't growing she only has it looked at every couple of years.
Bodies are just meat machines, y'know? Stuff goes wrong with machines all the time. They need tune-ups, regular maintenance, sometimes even replacement parts.
It seemed like after my DVT I was experiencing all kinds of fun new things - growing thyroid nodules, suspicious mammograms, purple ankle, suddenly dry skin on my face, aching muscles & joints, bouts of fatigue - a laundry list of stuff, and all in the span of a year. So I can relate. I look at it as a bump in the road though, and not the entire highway!

" Agree. Since the PE, everything in my body seemed to change, my metabolism, thyroid nodules, body aches, dehydration, etc. It's hard to sort out what may be something you'd have regardless of the PE and what may be related. I have ulcerative colitis that had been in full remission for years.About 7-8 months after the PE, I had one of the worst flare ups I've ever had.

I'm inclined to say that things in our bodies can get out of wack, from the whole physical trauma and then from the stress of it all. "
