Hi everyone.
I am a 25 year-old female, diagnosed with PE on 10/9/09, with the source clot being found on 10/20. After two overnight hospital stays and several ER visits, I had to take medical leave from my first trimester of law school. It's been frustrating to say the least. Also frustrating is my lack of activity. I have run several 1/2 marathons and one marathon in last couple years, and was looking forward to running another 1/2 in January 2010. As of now, I can walk about a mile. My leg starts aching about .25 into my walk, so I've resolved myself to taking lots of breaks. Have those of you who enjoy 1/2 and full marathons been able to return to your previous training levels? I know it will take time, but I'd like to know if a return is even a possibility. I'm trying not to get discouraged, but, as I'm sure you all understand, the life changes are pretty significant in the beginning. Posted on 10/29/09, 05:10 pm |

I got DVT in my right shoulder and bicep after climbing too hard so I took to mountain biking instead, knowing the risks!
I am super psyched to get back on the rock face again the break away from my life time hobby has been the best thing ever. Hvae you considered taking on a different hobby? If you are into the long distance stuff why not try a Marathon kayak? Its great for the the abs as well!!! I am also doing Yoga which is helping, if nothing else i am getting more flexible, a firmer butt and it is helping to take my mind off things.

Here is a link to the ClotBuster web blog. The site is owned by Roland Varga in Ohio who is a Triathelete who raises awareness about blood clots. If you scroll down on the right hand side there is a section titled "Athlete of the Month". In that section you will find fellow DVT/PE Surivors ranging from Amature Athletes, to Professional and Olympians. Allow of these folks have been affected by blood clots and have resumed their passion following recovery.
http://clot-buster-triathlete.blog... So to answer your question, yes you can get back competition. You may have some hurdles in regards to post thrombotic syndrome (PTS) but that is just a minor hurdle. Listen well to your body and what it's telling you!

I never had that level of fitness before. Since my PE (Feb 08) I started running for the first time in my life. I have done an 8km fun run. By no means a marathon, but coming from a total non-runner... if I can do it, there's hope for those of you who came from a running background!
I second Tom, listen to your body... ...don't go too hard too soon (I made that mistake as my general health and immunity are still recovering...)

I had two DVTs in my right leg in March 07 (and had mono). I did a 10k walk/run in the fall of 08 and completed walking my first half-marathon in April 09. I'm up to running 5ks now and hope to run about half of the half-marathon next April. I was active before the clots, but not to your extent. It took a while to get back to my performance level, and it was frustrating at times, but it's soooo very possible! I wish you the best of luck while you get back on your feet!
