Does anyone know if there have been any studies or does anyone have any annecdotal stories of garlic working in us high risk individuals.

Not sure if I would do it yet...just thinking about it.

" Pam,

Here's some information from the Mayo Clinic which is a very well know healthcare organization

http://www.mayoclinic.com/health/g...

keep in mind, though it does increase bleeding risks, it's mechanisms do not prevent blood clots. It serves as a anti-platelet agent. Because of this, much like Aspirin or Motrin, it is advised not to take Garlic supplements in unison with anticoagulant medication. "

" I found it interesting reading about garlic maybe breaking down blood clots but I guess if it works like aspirin - than it would not protect the veins.

" Pam,

Here is a better explaination of anti-platelet versus clotting proteins. Though it doesn't touch on supplement/vitamins it helps you understand the two different clotting cascades:

" But it's ok to include garlic in your diet, just not wise to take concentrated supplements while on warfarin. I use a lot of garlic in my cooking - it's full of nutrients and helps prevent that other deadly bleeding risk....vampires! "

" Lauralu,

You are definitely correct. Fresh, or powdered garlic is a mainstay of our cooking ingridients at our house - especially when I'm cooking :) "

" I am glad to hear it is okay to cook with garlic. I love garlic.

I also read that it has no effect on the INR.
