I had a DVT release to PEs in both lungs on Memorial Day. I am finished with heparin but taking coumadin. This was a no warning event. After about a week on 5mg coumadin I thought I had developed an alergy to the dye and my doctor switched me to the no dye 10mg version which I cut in half. I am having severe itching & burning of the scalp and sometimes on the arms. I have not seen this in any other postings. Any ideas or suggestions? Also, any opinions on whether I should see a vascular doctor or continue with my PCP who is internal medicine. Thanks!

I would definitely see somebody and have some allergy test done if I were you, any other changes in your diet, any other medication since this all started? Sometimes we chase the wrong causes...
Talk to your Dr about this, tell him that it persisted even after going from warfarin to coumadin (I think that was the change). Let us know of the outcome...

when i was on warfarin i had a sensation liek i had a sun burn on my upper arms a lot, though it was annoying it wasnt severe. I also experienced an itchy thingly scalp ofter which also wasnt severe but annoying and frustrating. In addition i had arm and leg pains that were pretty moderate in instensity. I also developed a problem with freqently needing to use the bathroom ( #1) I had all of these things checked out and of course always... there was nothing wrong. Well after abut 4 months of this i jsut couldnt take it anymore and i did some research a lot of my research came from ds posts and i demanded to be switched to real coumadin. Within a month all of those things went a way... even that well known brain fogg lessened! so i would really talk to your dr. and if your dr said they are the same pill as mine did... demand it and tell them "at least let me try it for a few months" and then come back and show them you were right!!!!
Good luck with that

oh and ps. if your dr gives you a hard time let him know... that you know that they are not the same pill.... thats why one is generic and cheaper. For some people the binders in the warfarin can cause allergic reactions, which describe a lot of what i was going through as well as i know a few others here who had the same.... watch out or the other signs ive described...

I went for blood stick today and my INR was still in good range, 2.6. My doctor had no problem with letting me switch to "real" coumadin to see if that will help relieve the itching but then forgot to tell my pharmacy. They did the switch for me. I'm keeping my fingers crossed that this will fix the itch. I was tempted to scalp myself yesterday! Thanks so much for help and I'll let you know what happens!

I got very dry with warfarin, my scalp actually developed major pimples and flaking from the drying (per my doctor). I was very itchy. I do agree to check for allergies though, to be safe.

Almost two weeks on coumadin and itch is almost gone. I believe the generic was the culprit. Now have to file appeal with insurance company to get them to pay. Thanks for all the help!
