Plavix and Statins

I have a friend who is a nurse and she asked me how come I can't just take Plavix. Does anyone know why? I am sure there is a good reason.

Also, I am wondering if anyone takes a Statin drug with Coumadin. My cholesterol is getting slightly over the 200 mark... I also thought I read something recently that made me think it could help clotting.

" I did a Google search on " Plavix" and never was it mentioned as a anticoagulant for thrombosis, mentioned for people that had strokes, heart attacks caused by blood clot in the arteries, never mentioned anything about DVT. So maybe you want to research it further, but I don't think that it is meant for DVT outpatients...
Check with your pharmacist, your Dr.
Is what I would do...
Same thing with the Statin drug, some drugs have bad interaction with coumadin, it's always good to check with pharmacists and Dr. about that.
That's my best advice. "

" Plavix makes the platelets in our blood not want to stick together and clump unlike warfarin which works on the fibrin which is what causes most DVT\PE's. At least I think that's part of the reason why, About the statins. I take pravastatin and it hasn't had an effect on my INR at all. I researched it before my Dr put me on a statin and requested pravastatin as it had the lowest interaction with warfarin because it's metabolized differently and some of the others, He wanted to put me on lipitor. " Plavix is great as a antiplatlet medication to prevent arterial clotting as is aspirin, however, it has no affect on the clotting process in veins. Here is a link from a leading expert who discusses this more in depth:

" Pam,

The website actually belongs to a good friend of mine, Deb Smith, of California.

Deb started the fvleiden.org website back in 1998 after another website which we both belonged to went off-line. In 2001 she had met Dr. Moll while at a CDC meeting in Atlanta, GA. Dr. Moll being very pro-patient wanted to contribute to her website by having a Q&A with the Doctor area. Since then, Dr. Moll was an essential figure in bringing together a group of patients which eventually formed the National Alliance for Thrombosis and Thrombophilia (NATT), where he currently serves as Medical Director. Here is his abbreviated bio:

" Thank you. Stop the Clot and the other site are terrific. We are so lucky to have those sites and of course this great site!!!! I don't know what I would have done without all these great people and all this excellent information.

I really learn more here than from my dcctors!!! I had a doctor's appt. the other day and after the exam I had to ask if he had anything to tell me and I even said I like a lot of information. He told me I am a healthy young woman and not to worry. It is nice... and I know he was being nice but still I wanted information... I have to be very specific with my questions.
