Back in February I noticed that my right foot was swollen for no reason. It has since started to turn a pinkish/purple. I have seen my doctor and have also seen an orthopedic. I have had numerous tests including 2 ultrasounds for a DVT. The second one went from my groin to my ankle. When the tech got behind my knee my leg started to feel like it was falling asleep. Is this normal? I have also recently developed a cough that I cannot get rid of. I thought it was my asthma so I did not tell my Dr. What can this possibly be?

Hi Busdriver,
Your symptoms sound very serious. I think it may be time to possibly either get a second opinion, or ask to see a specialist, and/or have the ultrasound performed at a different location. Ace

They don't do veinagrams any more? they are by far the most conclusive that I know off even if they can be very painful depending on where they make the injection. Never knew the top of my foot was so sensitive. LOL.
It's my understanding (and I could be wrong) is that the old fashioned veinagram didn't require a lot of interpretation to read and any clots would stand out very clearly. However I'm only remembering old info as it's been a long time since I had one.

Dear Busdriver,
I have had a PE and what you are describing (the pain in your chest, the cough, etc) is alarmingly similar to what happened to me. I also did what you are doing, kept going back to the doctor and they kept telling me it was nothing until that one fateful day a few days after I started feeling that way that I just started throwing up blood clots and could hardly breathe (later, I found out that it was at this point when a big clot had lodged itself in my left lung and caused it to collapse). Please don't allow yourself to go without being looked at. I believe you should find a doctor who will take your symptoms seriously and although a venogram is no longer performed a CT Angiogram is. Please please do get yourself checked and let us know how you are. :) My prayers are with you. xoxo ~Mandy

Hey BD, like Ace suggested,it's time for you to see a real Dr.
blood problems= hematologist lung problems=pulmonologist I'll give a little story as an example... You suddenly start , have problems with your car overheating, do you bring your car to A- the plumber ? figure it's all pipes and water and Tom is good is a good friend and pro'lly give me a good rate. B- The Radiator specialist, sure it's going to be more expensive BUT, he is a specialist, he has all the tools and parts and knows EXACTLY what to look for. C- The corner gas station, Harry is a great mecanic he does everything, he knows how to improvise because he does not have all the proper tools, should see what he did to my car!!! I had to go to the Radiator MAN to get it done PROPERLY. No, I'm NOT making a joke, it is serious, it's YOUR health we are talking of... Yes, ask you Dr. for a referral to see either a hematologist or a pulmonologist...

Dero,
I didn't know who's who with all the different type of specialists. That's why I was asking. I know what you mean when it comes to asking for the right discipline appropriate for the job. I see it all the time in my industry. I'm an AD/Exchange and Windows network services architect/infrastructure engineer. Many folks employ an IT consulting company to take care of their networks, but many times, they wind up with problems because they don't have such a person on staff, rather they have someone who is "familiar" with it, but not an expert. Like the old transmission commercial with the guy playing around wtih a hose nozzle saying he's worked on transmissions before. I wouldn't want him touching my car or truck! Hence why when some of these IT consulting companies hire me to investigate an issue they can't seem to resolve for some of these installations made by these non-experts, I wind up seeing numerous issues that could have been avoided if it were designed and implemented properly, enough to compile a multi-page report with recommendations. So I'll ask my primary for a referral to a hematologist, based on your post, that seems appropriate for my DVT. I won't ask for a phlebotomist or the guy playing with his hose! LOL!! Ace

Hey busdrive,
Who knows what this is? It might be a DVT, it might not but in any case you shouldn't mess around with chest pain. I think, if you can, go to the hospital as soon as possible and get checked out. At least they will have all the equipment to check everything in one go and find out where things are coming from. Good luck and keep us posted!
