Could I have Cushing's Syndrome?

My name is Haleigh, and I'm sixteen years old. My weight gain began when I was only three months old, and I was so heavy it looked like I had rubber bands around my arms and legs. My face has always been round, and I have what they call a "buffalo hump" on my neck. I've been feeling horrible lately, with muscle weakness and fatigue. It depresses me to feel this way, because I just got my driver's license a few months ago, but I hardly ever feel like going anywhere with my friends. One of them even made the comment (just playing around), "You are not a normal teenager!". About three years ago, bright red stretch marks appeared on my stomach and arms, but after about a year they disappeared. I can lose weight if I count carbs, but as soon as I go off the diet, I gain the weight back and then some. I've been having a lot of neck and shoulder problems lately, where my neck will be so stiff I can hardly bend it, and it causes tension head aches. I have a head ache almost every day. I've gained thirty pounds in just a year's time. It's been like this since I was a baby. I went to the Mayo Clinic last November, they did a 24-hour urine, but nothing showed up. They ended up telling us that it was basically genetics is the reason I gain weight. But I know genetics isn't causing me to feel so horrible all the time. Can someone please help me? I'm desperate.

Is a 24 hr urine the only test they did at Mayo? I'm curious if they did any blood work. And you definitely need to have blood work done. Have you been checked for diabetes? You definitely need to be seeing a competent Endocrinologist. There's a reason for a kid to be gaining weight and having the physical symptoms you are experiencing. My immediate advice to you is to start journaling what's going on in your body/mind, and find a good endocrinologist. They need to check every hormone level in your body through blook work. Hormones really can cause drastic changes in us, physically and mentally. Depression is one of the symptoms of Cushings, but you've every reason to be depressed from other sources. Good luck, keep me posted and I'll be praying for you.

They did a dexamethesone suppression test, but that was the only blood work they did at the Mayo Clinic as far as cortisol. I went to the doctor today, and they're going to do another 24-hour urine on me, and they did some more blood work. Hopefully everything will work out this time! Thanks for your prayers.

Let me know how all the blood work turns out. And hang in there. Sometimes diagnosing an illness takes longer than the cure!
