oral/gum problems

During my most recent flare with Crohn's I've had mouth issues. I'm wondering if prednisone is to blame, or if it's just another symptom of CD.

Oral Thrush - which has cleared up

Gum recession - especially on lower molars (dentist said I'm going to need several gum graphs) - this happened very quickly. I've had very healthy teeth/gums up to this point

Teeth sensitivity - especially to cold (top front teeth).

Anyone else had this? Did it go away after stopping prednisone? I'm also on Remicade, but this all started before my first infusion.

" I used to have teeth and gum problems but I lost all my teeth. Well I didn't lose them, they are in a container in the bathroom! (I paid for them so they are mine!)

That's supposed to be a funny.

Actually the stomach acid from being sick to your stomach and belching and all the good stuff that comes with this illness will affect your mouth. Make sure your dentist knows you have Crohns. "

" I can really relate to what your are saying. Like you I have had gum recession and tooth sensitivity. It might well be due to the Crohn's or associated jaw hinge (TMJ) problems, I also have AS with the Crohn's. I am sure your dentist will have told you to brush only up the gum onto the tooth and never down so as not to push the gum back further.

Apart from desensitising toothpaste I use a desensitising gel called Emoform which contains fluoride. Sometimes an extra strong fluoride mouth wash can help. I have never been offered gum grafts and I imagine that they would be rather expensive. Some dentists have a varnish they can paint on to act like tooth enamel on those parts of the tooth which would normally be below the gum line but are currently exposed causing the pain.

Belching acid into the mouth cannot help, I have a hiatus hernia and belch quite a lot! Certain soft chewy sweet things like gum, soft biscuits and things like Mars bars and the like also seem to set me off, probably pushes the gum back!

I don't remember it being related to prednisone taken when I have had a bad flare of the Crohn's so sorry. Some folk think smoking does not help either! Not convinced of this but then I do smoke! Lots of luck to you................JR "

" Forgot to mention that some dentists can use a small laser to fuse the end of the exposed tubules of the tooth where the gum has receded and I have found this effective where the recession was permanent.............JR "

" pred can effect your bones, so it would make sense that it could effect your teeth. And CD effect EVERYTHING from the lips to the other end, so it is probably caused by both. I hope that you feel better soon. "

" I had the same problem and it took us a couple years to figure out that it was chocolate causing my problem, My mouth broke out when I had a tooth pulled and then would settle down and break out again. One crazy dentist actually had the nerve to say he thought it was cancer before he tested, I went into tears. Fortunately his associate came in and looked and he knew it was the crohns. Through trial and error we found out that my mouth flairs were due to chocolate,
so you might want to try and keep a food diary and see if it seems to get better or worse with a particular food
Hope this helps "

" I have had mouth ulcers over the years and the only thing I found for relief was a product called Ulcer Ease. The first time I got it I ordered it online, now if I need it I can order it from Walgreens. It is quite expensive of course but if you need it, its worth it "

" Behcets is a rare disease that can mimick Crohns/Colitis and causes mouth ulcers. Its often overlooked and misdiagnosed. Many doctors wont even consider it because its rare and they like to go with what is statistically more likely. "
