Deciding on Surgery

I have FINALLY decided I'm doing it! I have been in a flare for 2 years and have exhausted all pharmaceutical treatments. Spent many thousands of dollars....I sort of wish I decided this a long time ago but I am looking forward to being free of UC once and for all very soon.
Anyways...I wanted to pass along a link to a You Tube Guru I discovered a while back. His name is Dennis and he has bravely and candidly documented his journey with UC and his progress of getting the J Pouch surgery. www.youtube.com/user/UCVlog Posted on 10/30/09, 03:10 am |

I hope it works out for you. You know it wont be like a total cure though, as you will still suffer the ill effects of not having a colon. However, many people feel their quality of life has improved. Its definitely a big decision and I think you did the right thing by exhausting all other options first.

I relate to your frustration and sentiments. I have my take down (step 2) next week. Good for you for making the decision. Dennis' videos were helpful to me too. I'm happy to share my experiences with you and I know MichDave who is also on DS is happy to share his as well.

Hi
I dont wish to sound condescending...but have you really tried all options...yes medical perhaps....but half the time ...that is what actually harms than truly helps as they only act as suppresants combined with huge side effects.. I had terrible UC and manage to cure by following Book by D.Klein... Have posted a great deal on this ...but go through this heated disscussion...48 posts...but read mine missallie and squasher...as well arguements against.... http://www.dailystrength.org/c/Cro... something I found on You tube... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xuK... message if you want any help or just chat about it... Good luck !!!!!!!! in wahtever route you take....

I just want to say I find it obnoxious when people respond to others decision to have surgery by passing on fanatical diet information. It's not like people reach the decision to have surgery lightly and it is ONE HELL OF A THING TO GO THROUGH. Of course all the options have been exhausted by time you get to that point and there is ALOT of back and forth and debating and questioning and soul searching and trying to find other answers.
Some of us don't have the luxury by time we are at the point of surgery to sit here for another 3 months and bleed while drinking juice.

Indie, I think it's incredibley self serving and well, really, really f***ed up to ask someone who has made a well thought out, difficut decision to sacrifice part of their body, and appears to be at peace with that decision, if they've tried everything. What the hell is wrong with you?
You sound more and more like a salesman. It's weird, man.

In my opinion, it cant hurt to expirment with dietary therapy. Diet is in fact a major factor in the outcome of inflammatory bowel disease. Some people discover that eliminating a food they are sensitive to like wheat or dairy helps the tremendously.
However, I fully support you in whatever you decide and hope it works out for you.

rmb ..fine choice of words...obviously the drugs have more unusual side effects than we first realised ..
No seriously accept your and kelsey's criticism ....a very difficult decession taken when one has exhausted all avenues...has to be respected and I do ....and if my comments in any way upset BuggaBoo...than i truly apologise.... My problem is ..have never conformed to pharmaceuticals ...I shall leave there...

I do think it's a little harsh to question someone's decision to have surgery. I still remember when someone asked me if my father had tried everything the night before he was scheduled to have bypass surgery after a major heart attack. He'd been in the hospital for two weeks and someone who didn't know me or my father (or his doctors) told me that he thought my father shouldn't have surgery. It was hurtful. This also happened when my ob-gyn determined that I needed to have a c-section to protect my son. When I went in for the scheduled c-section, two nurses tried to convince me to try to have a natural birth (like I'd had with my daughter) because I was actually in labor the day of the scheduled c-section. I was offended and hurt(they didn't know me or my situation) and was surprised that they thought I would have come to this decision lightly. One of the nurses who had tried to convince me came to my room after the c-section and said, "Thank goodness you decided to have the c-section, there's no doubt your son would have suffered major complications from a natural birth." I appreciated the apology, but did not appreciate her trying to confuse me on the cusp of a difficult and scary operation.
