Hair Loss from Remicade?

I had my third remicade infusion 8 weeks ago but in the past few weeks I've noticed my hair has become very thin and I have a small bald patch along my parting. the hair along the parting is also bery thing.
Has anyone experienced this before? I am also on Imuran and Steriods. I phoned the practice nurse who administers the Remicade and she said that she had never come across anyone who lost their hair. Will my hair grow back if I stop with Remicade and if I continue with it will it continue to fall out? Thank You Lynsey Posted on 08/20/08, 04:08 am |

I don't think my hairloss is due to a nutritional deficiency. I take a strong vitamin tablet everyday and I also eat really well. I also take calcium tablets as well. But I will speak to my consulatant the next time I see him because although I eat well, my body is maybe not absorbing the nutrients.
It helps to know that I am not alone in this.

I have been on remicade for 18 months now it has worked wonderfully for me. However, in the last 2 weeks I have noticed lots of my hair falling out all of a sudden. I have gone from a thick head of hair to a now very thin and patchy hair on top. I have heard remicade can cause hair loss, but it is the first I have noticed for me. I still feel great, but am not happy about losing my hair all of a sudden. I'm hoping to learn from others as well. Is it temporary? Will it grow back? Good Luck to you!

OK so here goes...
I have been on methrotexate and Humira d/c'd those and now on Remicade. I do NOT take steroids or anything else but now am noticing a significant hair loss. Everyone responds differently to their medications, some are more sensitized and other desensitized... Side effects listed on drug sites and even in the inserts with the meds are typical and do not list all potential side effects. When doing double blinds if the test subjects develope a runny nose that becomes a side effect or possible side effect. After all clinicals have been completed there may stil be a propensity for certain individuals to develope side effects that are not listed. So in a nutshell could your hair loss be due to Remicade? It is very likely. By the way I do not have CD or UC but I suffer from PsA and am HLA B-27+... Do not trust that everything you see on the web may be true, intit what you can, talk to your doctor and your pharmacist and understand theat even people that do not feel like arguing may not have all the answers despite what they have Googled.

My rule of thumb: If you notice something new at the same time as you start a new drug, it probably is the drug, whatever the doc says. Someone wise once said "there's no such thing as coincidence"

I had hair loss but it was when I was on prednisone and azathioprine (imuran). When I stopped the azathioprine, my hair stopped falling out....I've been on remicade for the past 12months and haven't had any problems~

My hair is definitely thinning out- I especially notice it after I get out of the shower when there's a nice handful that has fallen out. It gets all over my clothes during the day too- so annoying.:(
I'm on Humira... dunno if that's related. I had thin hair to start with so it's bothersome.

When I was on Remicade and I would see my Doctor for checkups, one of the questions he would always ask me is if I have noticed any hair loss. So yes it can cause it, but not in all patients. I would find a new Doctor or Nurse that knows more about it. My prayers and hugs to you.

Yes I had the same thing after I started Remicade. My doctor basically told me it was from steroids (which I had been on for 8 months prior to starting Remicade with no hair loss). I finally collected all my hair that fell out the morning before an appointment with my doc, put it in a plastic sandwich bag and carried it in to her office and said "this was from brushing my hair this morning." She finally called the company that manufactures it and they said that it is some sort of "uncommon" side effect (they used a different term and I don't remember what exactly that was)- uncommon enough that they aren't required to list it, but that there have been instances of it reported. I stopped the Remicade and switched to Humira and also had hair loss with that which I have also now stopped. My hair has stopped falling out so much but hasn't really come back yet.
