I have been on Imuran since mid-May, 150mg with some discussion about increasing dosage.
I realize that i have not been on imuran long enough to benefit from it, but my question is about side effects. Have any of you had a lot of nausea/vomiting from Imuran? Did it improve after a while, or did you have to go off of Imuran? If you went off due to side effects, how long before you felt better - as in less nausea? Was there anything that helpled relieve the nausea? What were your other side effects? I didn't have any side effects until about 2 weeks ago, when I started having short episodes of nausea. for the last week, i have had long episodes of nausea, with today being the absolute worst, when it lasted several hours, and i didn't start feeling better until I finally was able to vomit. I have lost 5 lbs in the last week due to not being able to eat. I have not been able to eat more than about 10 bites of anything for the last week and a half. sometimes, even one bite of food triggers nausea, so i have been sticking to small amounts of yogurt, cereal and soup, and occasionally fruit - the only things that have really not bothered me. I hve been popping Gravol Ginger pills like candy, they help sometimes, sometimes not, but at least they don't make me fall asleep. Oh, the other thing that is happening is a steadly worsening GGT test, which from what i have read, doesn't matter too much. thanks, any advice or comments appreciated. Posted on 08/14/12, 12:10 am |

I was on 150 mgs too and I noticed nausea and a constant sinus type headache by about the 2nd -3rd month after I started it, and it lasted, for me, about another month. I never threw up, but I am not a puker, generally. What time are you taking your meds? Some people take them at night to combat the nausea. I just sort of tolerated it , I guess. I didn't do anything to treat the nausea.
My dose was just increased to 200 mgs last month, and I'm starting to notice the sinus headache again, and I have a constant soar throat .. I'm not sick. I do think it's from the meds. I am not nauseous though. I'd mention it to your doc if you keep throwing up or if it continues. For me, by my 4th month, of being on the stuff, I noticed my UC improving as well as the side effect.

Also, not that you want to add another medication to your arsenal but there are prescription medications to help with nausea. After my gallbladder surgery, I really had a problem with nausea for months. I took the anti nausea meds as needed.

I recently started Azathioprine (generic Imuran) 150mg, and started having side effects after 2 weeks; bad chills, dizzy, achy knees and ankles. My GI took took me off and the next day the symptoms were gone. I stayed off for 2 weeks w/o any recurrance. I restarted at 100mg and the next day the bad achy knees and ankles returned. That stopped after 4 days followed by 4 days of mild nausea. That has also stopped now. I've seen from other folks that the side effects can be temporary so I'm weathering through it in hopes that the drug will be effective and I can stop taking prednisone. MY GI put me back up to 150mg last week and so far no new side effects. I hope you are feeling better soon.

thanks for sharing.
I think my ongoing nausea is from the imuran, but last night's 24 hours of violent vomiting was most likely a GI bug, which i no doubt picked up from my grandma when i visited her yesterday morning. regardless of the cause, you have given me some things to think about, and i will be talking to the doc asap. thanks!

Since it's an immunosuppressant, it can make you more prone to picking up viruses and what not, so yeah, you could have picked up something that you may have normally been able to fend off.
Take care of yourself!
